The Santa Rosa Junior College Public Relations department is seeking an individual with demonstrated management and leadership skills to join an outstanding team of staff to provide high quality services to our district, our community, and most importantly to our students. This is a full-time, supervisory management position. Under general direction, provides leadership and strategic direction to a comprehensive institutional communications, public engagement and branding initiative for the Sonoma County Junior College District that is sensitive to the changing demographics of Sonoma County. Plans, implements, and directs integrated public relations, and marketing programs including internal and external communications to raise visibility with the public and increase fundraising opportunities. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.
Public Relations incorporates a team approach to achieve strategic communication goals. Our staff recognizes that almost all aspects of institutional communications publications and product development, news and media relations, marketing, advertising, design, graphics, writing and editorial services, Web development, photography, and events coordination are best handled under a centralized communications service. Through an integrated marketing/public relations strategy, the Public Relations Department tells SRJCs remarkable story and history in many ways to strengthen public awareness of SRJCs quality educational offerings and services to students, and to increase student enrollment.
Required Abilities and Knowledge:
The ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; work effectively with a diverse range of individuals and groups across all college levels; provide leadership in management, planning, and short and long-term communication strategies; write and edit under pressure at the advanced level to ensure production of quality print and online products; organize, plan, schedule, coordinate, and/or support public relations functions and events; direct multiple projects under strict deadlines in a fast paced unit, administering project direction to meet diverse customer requests; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, diverse groups and individuals, and proactively identify methods of inclusion in all facets of communication.
The knowledge of effective public and media relations strategies; implementing effective methods to disseminate newsworthy information to multimedia; methods of effective marketing and advertising; all facets of publication and online product development, including coordinating photography, design, writing and editing, content and messages; operational knowledge of Public Relations, Internet/Website, Media, Spreadsheet and Word Processing software.
Required Education/Experience: Bachelors degree with emphasis in marketing, communications, or closely related field AND extensive and increasingly responsible experience managing public relations and directing marketing and advertising, or communications programs and experience with college, university, or corporate institutional communications programs; OR the equivalent.
PREFERRED: Masters degree in Marketing, Communications or closely related field

The Director is responsible for managing the Districts communication and marketing function which includes but is not limited to developing and overseeing implementation of an integrated communications, branding and marketing plan that achieves SRJCs strategic priorities, promotes fund-raising efforts and addresses the needs of internal and external constituencies.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Directs the development and distribution of news releases and public service announcements about the College and its activities, including writing, and editing and serving as a public spokesperson as directed; oversees maintenance of files for news clippings, news releases, and photos; serves as the media liaison for the District, including the establishment and maintenance of a social media presence in keeping with emerging social media trends; maintains good working relationships with both the print and broadcast media as well as key community organizations; and arranges news coverage and editorial support; oversees department budget, ensures fiscal compliance, and prepares budget reports; hires, trains, evaluates and supervises classified staff and short term, non-continuing employees; and manages department operations; keeps apprised of college news and information and represents the communication and marketing function of the District by attending college meetings and maintaining effective contacts with the college administration, faculty, staff and students; coordinates public opinion research studies to refine targeting, messaging, messengers, and other elements of strategy; establishes, distributes and maintains visual identity standards manual, including editorial, graphic, and Web guidelines; monitors adherence to identity/brand guidelines to ensure quality control of external print, Web, and broadcast products; oversees Web design for the College including updates and images for home page, and top tier pages and site mapping; oversees publication development program from concept to completion of print and online products; supervises design, content, prepress and print production services; provides extensive writing, research and editorial services to college programs for print products and Web sites and ensures accurate style and content; writes speeches, scripts, articles, letters and fact sheets targeting various constituencies; directs enrollment marketing and communications strategies to promote college offerings to multiple audiences; prepares advertising and promotional tactics, themes, and elements; researches demographics and markets to determine approach to information dissemination; identifies media for information release; develops integrated enrollment advertising campaigns; coordinates product development to reach target audiences via conventional and Web-based methods; schedules multimedia print and broadcast buys; solicits supplemental funds from college programs to support outreach; and develops niche campaigns; directs content and product development of multiple special projects; assists in planning special events; develops products for high visibility groundbreaking and dedication events for new facilities; writes articles and related supplements that announce and update projects to service region media; promotes various college activities and events such as Day Under the Oaks; coordinates professional photo shoots of academic and occupational programs and services for print, broadcast the Web; provides communication support for the Superintendent/President as required, including covering District Board meetings and assisting with other public relations projects; performs related duties as required or assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

- Salary Range: $6,721 - $7,394 per month (2012/13 Management Salary Schedule); salary reflects a 5.15% reduction for the 12/13 year with an equivalent amount of time off); maximum initial placement at $6,992 (placement within this range based on experience as documented in application materials.)

- Leave/Holiday time: Management employees earn 1 day of sick leave and 1.8333 days of vacation for each month worked. They are also entitled to holidays recognized by the District (14 holidays/year).
