The City of Fort Worth is a progressive, dynamic, full-service municipal organization operating under the council-manager form of government. Fort Worth is the 16th largest city and its metropolitan area has been recognized as one of the fastest growing areas in the country. Fort Worths population is no more than 700,000 spread out over 350 square miles.
The Director of Communications and Public Engagement reports to the Assistant City Manager of Administrative and Community Development Services. The Director will work closely with the City Manager, Assistant City Managers and Department Directors to synchronize the dissemination of critical information in a timely and effective manner including crisis/disaster communication management.
The mission of the Director is to create and implement a City-wide strategic communication plan that keeps the public and the workforce highly-informed, engages the public in local government decisions and manages media relations. The Director will be a senior strategist responsible for communicating with and engaging a diverse audience on City-wide initiatives, major media events and significant incidents affecting the citizens of Fort Worth. The Director will champion the use of all forms of communication including social media, the Citys website, the Citys cable channel, public forums, print materials, surveys and any other communication methods that are available or might become available in the future. The Director will also build relationships with neighborhood associations, the business community, civic organizations and other governmental bodies.
Skills / Requirements
The following education and/or experience are the minimum standards which provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position:
Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years experience (at least ten years of senior-level executive communications experience strongly preferred) as a communication strategist responsible for the development of organizational information and communication plans, coaching management staff on media relations and coordinating the use of multimedia methods for disseminating organizational information. Candidates must have experience with crisis management communication, public and media engagement and the development and implementation of branding strategies. A Masters degree in the above educational fields is preferred.
The ideal candidate will have senior-level executive expertise in strategic communications, developing communication plans for diverse audiences, proven ability to work with elected officials, civic and/or business leaders and senior management staff, expertise in assessing crisis communication situations, and developing and executing crisis communications strategies.
The successful candidate will possess superior listening and writing skills as well as outstanding organizational and communication (verbal and written) skills. The successful candidate will also have assured public presence and comfort level with the City Manager, Assistant City Managers, Department Directors, Mayor, City Council, Media, and the citizens of Fort Worth. A creative, strategic, and forward thinker with the ability to work independently. High level of integrity with a strong sense of urgency. Specific key competencies are listed below.

Proven ability to work with elected officials, civic and/or business leaders and senior management staff
Proven ability to assess crisis situations, develop a crisis communications strategy in conjunction with crisis responders and implement the crisis communications strategy
An outcome drive approach to communications that effectively balances strategic, operational, analytical, creative, social and other perspectives
