DIRECTOR OF FINANCIAL AID
Department: Financial Aid
Job Summary: Reporting to the Executive Director of Enrollment Management, this position will be responsible for: Leadership and management of a comprehensive financial aid program; Compliance and management oversight of federal, state, and institutional policies and programs; Collaborating with other offices and services to effectively support the objectives of the university.
Duties: Supports the university by creating and managing financial aid programs that are in compliance with federal and state regulations and industry best practices.
Oversees the review, eligibility determination, and awarding financial aid to qualified students. Develops and/or revises departmental policies and procedures; coordinates office activities. Provides leadership in the improvement of customer service to both internal and external customers. Works with Information Technology personnel in the development and maintenance of financial aid module in Banner, and seeks to automate processes to enhance office efficiency.
Prepares and administers the departmental and financial aid budgets ensuring compliance with applicable policies and budget limitations.
Completes annual and periodic reports as required by federal, state, and institutional offices to secure and maintain participation in various financial aid programs. Maintains current and up-to-date knowledge of federal and state regulations governing financial aid programs; prepares financial aid awards to qualified students for scholarships, grants, student loans, and related financial assistance programs; reviews financial applications and related documents; approves applications and packages awards for eligible students; counsels with students and parents on financial aid eligibility and related matters; answers questions and provides information to undergraduates, transfer and graduate students, parents and others; makes independent professional judgment decisions based on individual student circumstances; adjusts application information and/or dependency status and recalculates aid eligibility and develops/implements/enhances a comprehensive default aversion plan.
Handles difficult or adversarial situations arising with students and/or parents concerning financial aid determinations and/or the repayment of financial aid; composes correspondence or uses standard form letters to communicate with financial aid applicants, parents, recipients, departments, outside organizations, etc. as needed.
Participates in recruitment and retention programs; serves on various university and state, regional, and national level committees; represents the university at other functions and events; attends training, seminars, conferences, and other meetings as needed; makes financial aid presentations and provides related training to university personnel; visits high schools and junior colleges to provide financial aid information to students, teachers, counselors, and school administrators.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: An in-depth knowledge of government regulations and issues - of compliance; knowledge of accounting and internal control procedures; knowledge of departmental and general office procedures and practices; knowledge of the principles of effective employee training and supervision; knowledge of budget management; knowledge of the operation of personal computers and the use of related software.
Strong organizational and communication skills; a commitment to customer service; a demonstrated record of using technology in developing and implementing financial aid programs and services; knowledge of the role served by financial aid in an overall enrollment management environment; knowledge of the financial aid philosophy and fundamental practices and procedures of student financial aid programs; knowledge of the operation of personal and on-line computers and the use of word processing and database software; knowledge of spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of staff; ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations; ability to work independently and meet work and project deadlines; ability to train others in the use of financial aid management and program requirements; ability to organize and complete work in a timely manner; ability to perform work requiring accuracy and attention to detail; and ability to work harmoniously and effectively with students, parents, university personnel, and the general public. Strong oral/written communication and interpersonal skills. A strong commitment to customer service.
Physical Requirements: Requires prolonged periods of sitting and standing; requires occasional walking, bending, and reaching; medium level manual dexterity needed; occasional lifting up to 30 lbs. Works in a pleasant, well-lighted, temperature-controlled environment; frequent periods of heavy workload.
Qualifications: Possession of a Bachelor's degree in business, management, operations, management information systems, accounting, or other appropriate field. Minimum of five years of successful progressive experience in financial aid administration including at least 3 years of supervisory experience. Education and/or experience can be blended on an individual basis to produce the successful candidate.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree preferred. Experience with Banner Student Information System.
