The Disability Student Services Specialist is a full time, annual appointment with the period of employment to begin as soon as possible.
Position Summary: The Disability Services Specialist coordinates services for students with disabilities in compliance with UW System policy, the Congressional Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, and the Americans with Disabilities Act and its amendments. This position assists students with disabilities in becoming integrated into the campus community and maximizing their independence. The specialist is also responsible for instituting programs and projects designed to increase the awareness and responsiveness of the campus community to the needs of students with disabilities.
1. Bachelor's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Special Education or a related field
2. Experience working with individuals with disabilities
3. Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups and individuals
4. Ability to consistently demonstrate independent judgment and decision making
5. Ability to interpret and implement federal and state laws and UW System policy
6. Excellent interpersonal, written communication and organizational skills
7. Demonstrated computer skills, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, e-mail, and database management
1. Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling, School Psychology, Psychology, Higher Education, Special Education or closely related field
2. Knowledge of Universal Design and the ability to utilize and incorporate assistive technology to support students with disabilities
3. Experience working with adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, and ADHD in an educational setting
4. Demonstrated knowledge of project planning, transition programming and problem solving techniques
1. This position has the responsibility to coordinate services for students with disabilities and assist the Director and Assistant Director with the administrative function of the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.
2. Assist current and prospective students and their families through the process of acquiring appropriate documentation and registering for services.
3. Determine eligibility and coordinate reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
4. Maintain strict confidentiality and show professional discretion in all interactions
5. Assess and provide appropriate assistive technology
6. Provide training to students on how to implement accommodations and use assistive technology provided by UW-Platteville
7. Ensure compliance with disability laws
8. Comply with FERPA, University policies, and department guidelines
9. Serve as a consultant to faculty members regarding accommodations and provide training on disability issues
10. Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends
11. Other duties as assigned
