Description of position

The Data Architect will join the Database Development Team, which is responsible for the design and overall quality of Costco’s Enterprise and Application Data Models. While meeting the database needs of current projects, this team is also responsible for supporting the development and execution of a long term strategy to modernize the transactional and analytical databases underlying Costco’s legacy systems.
The Data Architect will be actively involved in the evaluation and review of data models across the organization in order to ensure that a high level of database design is reached and maintained. This person will collaborate with Enterprise Architects and Solution Architects to drive data design within the database systems in support of Costco’s Information Systems. The Data Architect will be assigned to projects across multiple domains, including OLTP, OLAP and MDM projects, as a resource responsible for the database design need as well as oversee the work of others in these areas. While providing the database expertise needed for the success of the assigned projects this individual will also be required to follow database modeling policies and standards. This position will require an individual who can work with minimal supervision on a wide range of projects interfacing with development teams, business analysts, I.S. management and members of the business community while constantly ensuring that their work is aligned with Costco’s strategic direction.

Tasks and responsibilities
  • Apply enterprise and solution architecture decisions to data architecture frameworks and models
  • Apply data modeling techniques and standards to I.S. solutions
  • Collaborate with data modelers for data model management, internal model review, and version control
  • Conduct data model reviews with project team members
  • Participate in information meta-data strategy definitions
  • Collaborate with Data Management Team to establish data quality baselines and collaborate on data issues
  • Create data source catalogues
  • Perform data source gap analysis
  • Define data migration specifications
  • Design conceptual data models
  • Design logical data models
  • Design physical data models
  • Design canonical data models
  • Design database transaction structures
  • Design data warehouse & data mart structures
  • Identify data requirements and related KPIs, metrics
  • Collaborate with other technical teams to design databases which meet business and technical requirements
  • Maintain expertise and proficiency in the various application areas
  • Develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of cross-system integration, interactions and relationships in order to develop an enterprise view of Costco’s data needs

Required skills, abilities, and certifications
  • Documented experience in a data architect role on a variety of large scale projects (3 years minimum)
  • Documented experience in logical and physical data modeling and design (7 years minimum)
  • Knowledge and/or experience with service oriented architecture entities and frameworks
  • Knowledge of entity relationships
  • Extensive experience with disciplined software development lifecycle
  • Experience overseeing work of less experienced data modelers
  • Ability to communicate at all levels within the organization
  • Thorough knowledge of multi-platform database commands
  • Knowledge of database performance/tuning/measurement, as well as user access and data manipulation

Recommended skills, abilities, and certifications
  • The Data Architect should have a working knowledge, and documented experience, in some or all of the following areas in order to support currently active and planned projects
    • SAP applications, including CRM, FI and HCM modules
    • Master data management
    • Data warehousing, including business line and enterprise data warehouses, operational data stores, and business intelligence data structures
    • eCommerce
    • Legacy application upgrades
    • Others as needed, including COTS and new in-house applications
    • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends and standards
