Medivation, Inc. (NASDAQ: MDVN – a publically traded biopharmaceutical company located in San Francisco, is currently seeking a qualified, highly motivated individual for the position of Data Integration Specialist.

Medivation is focused on the rapid development of novel small molecule drugs to treat serious diseases for which there are limited treatment options. Medivation’s goal is to transform the treatment of these diseases and offer hope to critically ill patients and their families. With the approval of Xtandi (enzalutamide) capsules in late August and the early September product launch immediately following, Medivation is in the process of building and developing a world-class workforce to take the company to the next strategic level.

The Data Integration (DI) Specialist’s role is to assist or lead, plan, coordinate, design and implement the integration of data across various sources into an organized and unified view. This individual participates in the monitoring of data flow between databases, servers and Cloud services. Proven communication skills, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of integration best practices are critical to successful performance in this role. This position reports to the Manager, Master Data Management.

Job Duties

Essential duties & responsibilities included but are not limited to the following:

Strategy & Planning
  • Orchestrate integration projects and corresponding strategies between business units, data stewards, and development teams
  • Assist in planning, executing, and managing the strategic integration of new data and data stores into existing systems and infrastructure throughout the enterprise, including introduction of Cloud services as applicable. Ensure that integration planning and practices are aligned with strategic business goals and the company’s overall strategic vision
  • Assist with developing standards and processes to support and facilitate integration projects and initiatives
  • Help to revise DI architectures when required to be compatible with changing business needs and client standards so that all legal, compliance, and operational requirements, such as data sovereignty, regulatory security and privacy policies, and service level agreements (SLA), are accounted for
  • Help maintain high standards of data quality through the introduction and enforcement of information handling processes and organization of the DI processes
  • Collaborate with BI specialists to establish overarching strategies and service oriented architecture
  • Help evaluate and select database/data warehouse components, including hardware, relational database management systems, ETL software, metadata management tools and database design solutions

Acquisition & Deployment
  • Conduct research on emerging DI products, languages, and standards in support of procurement, development, security, and integration efforts in relation to the Cloud, BI, and Master Data Management
  • Assist with the selection of any DI tools, be they DI as-a-service (DIaaS) or DI On-premise, deemed appropriate for the organization
  • Deploy and maintain any DI tools, be they DI as-a-service (DIaaS) or DI On-premise, deemed appropriate for the organization
  • Collaborate with analysts, data stewards, developers, and system owners in the testing of newly-incorporated databases and integration measures.
  • Lead or support testing phase of DI development in order to identify and remedy potential problem areas
  • Work with business associates to negotiate terms for SLAs when looking at Cloud DI

Operational Management
  • Help to ensure the collection and coherent interpretation of the various business processes affected by integration efforts
  • Help to ensure that integration projects meet business requirements and goals, fulfill end-user requirements, and identify and resolve systems issues
  • Work diligently to enhance or improve business processes via integration, or, as necessary, minimize the impact of integration on those processes
  • Evaluate results of integration projects, then report and make recommendations based on findings
  • Frequently compare DI solutions with those available in the market to assess and monitor levels of service provided by current vendors
  • Where applicable, investigate and qualify potential integration solutions in the Cloud, On-Premise, or in a Hybrid arrangement to better allocate resources
  • Review data quality, addressing any issues through the creation of new processes or adjustment of the DI architecture
  • Help measure and manage SLAs of the DI solutions

  • 5 years direct experience in enterprise-level DI
  • Proven experience in integrating the linking of cross-functional databases between disparate business units and systems
  • Experience with business and technical requirements analysis, business process modeling/mapping and methodology development, and data mapping
  • Extensive hands-on experience with data integration architectures, including MS SQL,, Veeva, FTP,
  • Technically fluent as a DBA with various architectures
  • Previous exposure to Cloud DI and management
  • Strong background in risk management methodologies as they relate to integration and Cloud computing
  • Direct, hands-on experience with automated DI tools
  • Technical knowledge of relational database design and management techniques
  • Good project management skills and/or substantial exposure to project-based work structures, project lifecycle models, etc
  • Working knowledge of networks, PC operating systems and iPads
  • Knowledge of network hardware, protocols, and standards
  • Demonstrated ability with tools such as ETL, SSIS, APEX Loader, etc
  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements, data privacy practices and laws including FDA 21 CFR Part 11, SOX and HIPAA
  • Knowledge of Computer Systems validation
    Strong understanding of end-user needs and requirements

Work Conditions

  • Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as computers
  • Ability to participate in training sessions, presentation, and meetings
  • Some travel will be required for the purpose of offsite requirements gathering, software installation, training, configuration, and so on
  • Four-year college diploma or university degree in computer science or computer engineering, and/or 5 years equivalent work experience
