REPORTS TO: CSO & Director of Database Operations

Actively participate in the technical design, structural requirements, and administration / evaluation of existing or proposed database systems by providing system expertise and database domain knowledge. Monitor existing database systems and perform system enhancements to ensure optimal performance to meet business requirements. Design and coordinate installation and configuration of new database instances in all environments. Assist with continuous improvement efforts in enhancing performance, providing increased functionality, and supporting operational systems based on business requirements. Provides 24 x 7 operational support for database systems on a rotating schedule.


Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

1. Customer Service

  • Take the necessary steps to ensure customers' needs are exceeded in an accurate and timely manner.
  • As a member of the database 24x7 pager rotation, provide a high level of accurate and timely support for both internal and external customers.
2. Database Management and Architecture

  • Provide expertise regarding data movement and management tools to administer and maintain data confidentiality, integrity, and availability in all database environments.
  • Apply knowledge of SQL databases to maintain consistent peak performance and proper secure access.
  • Perform regular database implementations, backup and replication, configuration optimization, and upgrades.
  • Install new database instances and is responsible for database system recoverability.
  • Maintain standardized database procedures and standards regarding the administration, security, and utilization of all database systems.
  • Architect, develop, implement, administer, and maintain policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of the client/server database environments.
  • Identify and effectively resolve database performance concerns, capacity requirements, environment migrations, on demand restores, and other distributed database operational enhancement opportunities.
  • Analyze future database requirements and develop long-term strategies for data storage and system usage while maintaining an effective and consolidated environment.
  • Monitor, review, and provide appropriate database access as needed while establishing standards and procedures related to data security.
3. Database Design and Development

  • Analyze, design, and implement sound database schemas.
  • Strive to achieve system integration through database design.
  • Provide expertise in creating database tables, views, indexes, constraints, triggers, stored procedures, rules and other objects to optimize performance and enforce data integrity.
  • Has responsibility for operational support, database procedures and standards, management, security, maintenance and utilization of all database servers.
4. Data Movement

  • Develop and manage plans and procedures that automate and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of data processes and analysis.
  • This includes, but is not limited to, using scheduling tools and scripting routines to automate data loading and refreshing from internal and external sources.
5. SQL Reporting

  • Assist in developing, generating, and distributing SQL reports in support of business operational systems, business information systems, and ad-hoc decision support needs.
6. Testing and Deployment

  • Work with business analysts and data analysts to develop adequate testing procedures for database enhancements and data corrections.
  • Provide effective testing and implementation of new technology related to data management, storage, and retrieval.
Additional functions of the position may include:

BA/BS degree in Computer Science, MIS, or comparable experience required. MA/MS in Computer Science, MIS, or comparable experience is preferred. Minimum of five years (required) or seven years (preferred) database management and development, experience with data warehouse database architecture and decision support tools in a Microsoft SQL Server environment. Microsoft MCDBA, MCITP, or MCSE (Data Platform) certification is preferred:

  • High proficiency with database analysis, development, administration, stored procedures, SQL query analysis and optimization, SQL Server Integrations Services (SSIS), Data Transformation Services (DTS), and triggers.
  • Familiar with a variety of industry standards regarding Microsoft database development concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Proficient with Microsoft database tools and technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively architect complex databases to meeting the need of the rapidly changing business environment.
  • Proficient in current and recent versions of Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Visual Studio, and database optimization and monitoring tools.
  • Strong expertise using current/recent versions Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, work independently, plan, organize projects, analyze data and produce concise summaries, be innovative and creative, improve database processes and develop standards, and have a positive impact on others.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and effectively demonstrate team building attitude and skills.

  • Operate a computer and related peripheral equipment proficiently and performs repetitive motions on computer for extended periods of time. This also includes reading the screen and keying/typing information.

  • Proficient in Windows environment using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer.
  • Ability to understand and explain various subject matter and consult on concepts, programs, terminology and methods.
  • Ability to successfully interact with and represent the organization to staff, officers, board members, customers, industry specialists, and the public at all levels.
  • Ability to use and understand various computer software related to carrying out essential responsibilities of the position.
  • Ability to travel by automobile or commercial transportation to carry out essential responsibilities of the job.
  • Ability to lift or move equipment up to 50 pounds from one location to another.
