St. Edward’s University is an independent Catholic University, which has increasingly gained national recognition for high quality academic programs, characterized by its Holy Cross educational mission. Over the last decade, the University has undergone a dramatic transformation which has included a growing enrollment, beautiful additions to its campus, and a strategic enhancement and expansion of academic programs within the global community. Approximately 5100 students attend St. Edward’s, with students coming from 45 states and 44 countries. The University offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 50 areas of study and eleven master’s degrees.
The School of Natural Sciences offers majors in: biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, computer information science, forensic chemistry, environmental chemistry and mathematics. The School encourages and funds student-faculty research and scholarly activities.
The School of Natural Sciences offers outstanding new facilities for its students and faculty as a result of the campus expansion of recent years. In 2006, the University completed the $21 million John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center-North, which houses biology and chemistry. In 2013, the $22 million John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences and Technology Center-South added 50,000 additional square feet of academic and research space for mathematics and computer science, as well as general education. The St. Edward’s University Wild Basin Creative Research Center, located in a pristine urban Austin wilderness, offers an interdisciplinary field laboratory providing research and hands-on learning for all St. Edward’s academic schools.
The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate in the natural sciences; an outstanding teaching, research and leadership experience commensurate with appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure; an administrative style that is collaborative, transparent, and inclusive of all disciplines within the school; a commitment to encouraging and supporting student-faculty research and scholarship; the capacity for creative and innovative leadership; a commitment to enhancing and perpetuating the Holy Cross tradition as an integral part of the University’s Catholic heritage; the ability to engage in ongoing strategic planning and program development; a commitment to fostering a diverse community and promoting science-focused global initiatives; and a willingness and the ability to engage all constituencies in enhancing the School through effective resource development.
The University invites nominations and applications for the Dean of The School of Natural Sciences, who reports directly to the University’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Mary K. Boyd. The review of candidates will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The appointment will be effective on or about July 1, 2014.
