Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) is seeking a dynamic collaborative leader to become the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research. Under the supervision of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the dean will work collaboratively to provide leadership in all matters pertaining to graduate programs and research, and will have responsibility over the operations of the College. The dean will be the chief advisor to the Provost for graduate education and research and represents the Provost to University and external constituencies within areas of designated responsibility.

The dean will be charged to align, grow, advise, promote and support the various graduate programs and research initiatives within Northeastern Illinois University. The dean will also be responsible for establishing and implementing policies and operating procedures for graduate programs and research. Additionally the dean will work collaboratively to develop short and long term goals for the College and graduate programs that are linked to the University and Academic Affairs strategic and enrollment plans. The new dean will also oversee the expansion of policy development and operating procedures to enhance and celebrate faculty and student research, creative activity and external funding. The dean will also be responsible for the development of new programs that align with work force needs in the region that are geared toward the working adult.

The successful candidate will be an intellectual leader among the faculty with high aspirations for the College, graduate programs, and the quality of students. NEIU seeks an energetic and conscientious administrator broadly familiar with national and regional issues in higher education and graduate study. She/he will be an effective advocate for the graduate programming and the teaching/research mission in the context of the University's strategic commitment to interdisciplinarity. The next dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research will be a strong proponent for a diverse faculty and student body, and an effective fund raiser.

Required Qualifications include:
  • A PhD or equivalent academic degree from an accredited university, and academic credentials and experience sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured associate professor or professor in one of NEIU's academic departments or programs;
  • A successful record of excellence in teaching, and advising and mentoring, preferably at the graduate level;
  • A record of quality research and/or creative activity;
  • A successful record of service and academic leadership at the department, college and university level;
  • A collaborative leadership style that is committed to consensus building, diversity and collegiality;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Strong organizational, planning and project implementation skills;
  • Demonstrated success in academic program development and growth, preferably at the graduate level;
  • Experience in on-line, distance and adult education;
  • At least three years of administrative experience as a dean, division/unit leader or department chair.

For those candidates who appear equally qualified relative to required qualifications, the following experiences and abilities are highly desirable and will be considered in identifying preferred candidates:
  • Demonstrated success in external funding including policy development and growth;
  • Expertise in research proposal development;
  • Success in obtaining competitive funding for research;
  • Knowledge of federal compliance regulations, including those applicable to the use of laboratory animals and human subjects in research;
  • Experience in a collective bargaining environment.

The dean's key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Oversight of graduate studies, centers and interdisciplinary graduate programs;
  • Provide overall supervision and administration of graduate programs in the College;
  • Develop new initiatives and manage administrative functions associated with graduate teaching and research award programs;
  • Coordinate appropriate data collection for accreditation processes and program review in conjunction with other colleges and departments;
  • Working with the Admissions Office, Graduate Education Liaisons and graduate program facilitators, provide assistance to students applying for admission to graduate programs;
  • Supervise staff as assigned, including the administrative assistant and the director of sponsored research;
  • Address faculty and graduate student related problems and issues as they arise;
  • Assist program facilitators, advisors, coordinators and department chairs in the maintenance of existing graduate programs, and in the development of new programs, new programmatic thrusts, and shifts in program delivery systems with an emphasis on increasing enrollment in graduate programs, and developing new programs that meet workforce needs;
  • Develop short and long term strategic goals centered on university strategic initiatives;
  • Work with enrollment management services, program facilitators and department chairs to develop strategic enrollment management plans;
  • Ensure that all graduate programs comply with governance and policy requirements of the College, University and all accrediting bodies;
  • Liaison with appropriate shared governance bodies for all graduate programs and research within the college and university;
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase research and funding;
  • Coordinate programs to promote and recognize research activity;
  • Facilitate new research initiatives, especially multidisciplinary and cross-departmental initiatives;
  • Other duties as assigned.
