About the Position:
The Temporary Deckhand position will have an Official Duty Station of the Dredge Goetz, wherever its located. Home port is Fountain City, WI. Fountain City is a small community (est 3500) located on the Mississippi River. Winona, MN (est 35,000) is located 10 mi south and LaCrosse, WI (est 70,000) is 50 miles further south. Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN (est. 1.5 million) is located roughly 200 miles north of Fountain City. The immediate area is surrounded by several small communities and farmland. All of the areas mentioned are located on the Mississippi River and are known for their watersports, camping and fishing opportunities.

Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized.

Temporary Duty (TDY) travel is 80 percent.

Temporary position not to exceed one year.

Works on floating plant units consisting of a pipeline or mechanical dredge, derrick boats and derrick scows, tugs and attendant plant engaged in maintenance dredging. Handles rope lines and steel towing cables , securing floating plant. Splices rope and cable, prepares light rigging, connects, disconnects, repairs and replaces pipelines, Operates electric and steam winches and capstans. Greases sheaves, cables, winches, cutter shaft bearings. Assists in running cable from cutter head to swing anchor, during operations. Takes before and after dredging soundings. Rides scows to dumping ground to release load, starting and stopping gas engine to operate dump scow doors. Rows auxiliary work boat or operates outboard motor boat. Assists in breaking up and making up tow. Cleans, lubricates deck machinery, working as helper to higher grade crew members in repair and overhaul of plant. Applies prime, finish coats on exterior of boat including hull. Loads, stores supplies. Performs general labor on a variety of construction projects.

SCREEN OUT ELEMENT: Ability to do the work of an entry level Deckhand without more than normal supervision. Applications will also be screened for the following elements:
Operation of Motor Vehicles
Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order)
Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (both written and oral)
Ability to Drive Safely (vehicles and boats)
Ability To Operate Safely (non motor vehicles)
Reliability and dependability as a Deckhand

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside with the preponderance of time exposed to heat, cold, rain and snow. There is exposure to paint fumes, to eye injuries while chipping paint and rust, to physical injury while lifting heavy objects or slipping on decks and other surfaces, overhead loads, or falling overboard and drowning.

The Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
