This class is assigned to perform crime prevention and investigation activities.
FOR OUT-OF-STATE CERTIFIED OR MILITARY MEMBERS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT
If you are certified in Law Enforcement in another state, a federal agency, or military, or if you have more than four years' break in Florida Law Enforcement certification, you may be exempted from attending the full basic recruit academy and may qualify for an Equivalency of Training. To determine if you meet the requirements please contact the Gulf Coast Criminal Justice Selection Center for an assessment. To be eligible for this position, you must first complete the Equivalency of Training process.
Examples of Duties:
Responds to calls for service or complaints from citizens.
Patrols an assigned area to enforce local, State, and Federal laws, including applicable traffic laws and related traffic control activities.
Participates in investigating crimes, which includes collecting and preserving evidence, interviewing witnesses and suspects, and securing crime scenes.
Prepares detailed and accurate reports, records, statistics, and/or logs on daily activities.
Renders emergency assistance at accidents and/or catastrophic situations.
Serves civil and criminal warrants and/or other legal processes utilizing established rules of civil process; apprehends criminals and makes arrests.
Transports suspects and/or applicable individuals to appropriate facilities and/or locations.
Attends court to testify in trials and/or participates in depositions.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Positions assigned to Investigations may be responsible for:
Investigating crimes and preparing appropriate referrals for prosecution.
Assisting other law enforcement agencies with investigations through active physical work and/or research and documentation of private and/or public records.
Informing and educating the public on the awareness of criminal activity and ways to prevent such activity.
Developing, managing, and maintaining confidential informants.
Performing physical and electronic surveillance.
Maintaining unit equipment and vehicles.
Participating in tactical planning for unit operations.
Completing background checks on potential employees.
Positions assigned to Air Operations may be responsible for:
Assisting with pre-flight aircraft inspections and operations checks.
Performing mission equipment checks.
Performing weather and flight data checks and verifications.
Assisting with preventive maintenance on aircraft.
Providing aerial support for ground units.
Cleaning and maintaining aircraft facilities.
Navigating systems in flight.
Operating thermal imaging systems.
Positions assigned to Technical Services may be responsible for:
Examining items of evidence to determine if latent prints are present.
Comparing latent prints to known fingerprints, palm prints or foot prints.
Responding to subpoenas for trials, hearings, and depositions to give testimony.
Presenting expert witness testimony in court.
Releasing firearms to appropriate owners utilizing established policies and procedures.
Participating in the coordination and disposal of evidence.
Positions assigned to Forfeitures may be responsible for:
Writing and preparing contracts, affidavits, and/or other related legal documents.
Preparing documents for prosecution in legal cases.
Testifying in court for the seizure of property.
Positions assigned to Training may be responsible for:
Preparing for and instructing classes on a variety of topics related to the effective operations of the department.
Maintaining instructor aids, training equipment, and inventory.
Developing lesson plans.
Maintaining training records.
Positions assigned to Internal Affairs may be responsible for:
Conducting in-depth internal investigations as ordered to determine if an employee violated applicable policies or procedures.
Responds to complaints and/or concerns for the public and/or internal employees.
Preparing related reports.
Positions assigned to the K-9 Unit may be responsible for:
Facilitating police K-9 training.
Utilizing K-9s in daily activities.
Providing daily care for K-9.
Facilitating K-9 lectures and demonstrations.
Positions assigned to Court Security may be responsible for:
Conducting and documenting security inspections prior to court sessions;
Assisting in moving inmates and detainees.
Collecting fingerprints and DNA samples of individuals convicted of crimes.
Assisting individuals and the general public entering the judicial center.
Training and Experience (positions in this class typically require):
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.), and one year of experience performing work as a certified law enforcement officer; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Licensing Requirements (positions in this class typically require):
Valid driver's license

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Very Heavy Work:
Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel.
