Design Manager - Denver, CO
The challenge? Help to meet the ever increasing demand for electric power. Our Design Manager job offers you an exciting opportunity to help our utility clients provide safe, clean and reliable sources of electric power to heat homes and schools, run factories and provide goods and services that we all depend upon. Each day you will use your expertise in Design Management to help our clients meet the power needs of their customers.
Our Design Manager :
Manages the Design Group's software administrators, design coordinators, 3D modelers, and design support staff; including design staff in other design offices.
Provides the overall technical direction for the Design Group.
Coordinates all work within the Design Group.
Ensures an integrated, efficient, and reliable intelligent 3D design software platform, which primarily includes SmartPlant 3D, SmartPlant P&ID, SmartPlant Electrical, SmartPlant Instrumentation, and SmartPlant Foundation.
Continually implements new and improved design software capabilities.
Organizes formal design software training for engineering staff.
Assigns staff to projects and tasks.
Recruits qualified staff.
Ensures all projects are adequately staffed.
Prepares and maintains staffing plans.
Completes annual performance reviews for design staff.
Provides strong leadership within the Design Group and project teams.
Creates and maintains engineering standard work processes and procedures regarding the design software and its application.
Provides input to project proposals including labor and cost estimates.
Meets with clients to discuss ongoing and future projects.
Provides technical oversight to the design process.
Quickly resolves issues associated with the design software.
Regularly checks engineering deliverables for quality and accuracy.
Provides meaningful input in the development of plant general arrangement drawings.
Creates 3D renderings and visual simulations.

Minimum 12 years of experience in the design and construction of power projects.
Associates Degree required
Minimum 10 years of EPC project experience.
Minimum 5 years of construction field experience.
Minimum 10 years of experience in CADD software, 3D modeling, and database design.
Minimum 5 years of experience in the management of groups and teams.
Strong leadership skills: capable of leading large teams in multiple offices.
Minimum 3 years of experience with SmartPlant design software; including SmartPlant 3D, SmartPlant P&ID, SmartPlant Electrical, SmartPlant Instrumentation, and SmartPlant Foundation.
Good understanding of the design of wet and dry scrubbers.
Good understanding of Material Handling associated with power plants (coal fired, wood, waste to energy, etc).
Experience in developing 3D renderings and visual simulations. Can create power plant layout concepts and general arrangements.
Thorough knowledge of design software platforms, including MicroStation, SmartPlant, and AutoCAD. Has experience in administrating these design software platforms.
Understands how to integrate designs that contain multiple disciplines and occur in multiple remote locations.
Deep understanding of design practices including checking processes, quality assurance, and design automation.
Can effectively mentor junior staff.
Possesses strong communication skills: can write clearly and effectively.
Manages work load and assigned tasks to the necessary project schedules.
Understands the work processes required when working in a data centric 3D design environment.
Combined-cycle power experience is preferred.
Formal SmartPlant training is preferred.
Experience with Laser Imaging is a plus.
Formal leadership training is preferred.
