– Complete Stack Automation and Tools

CustomMade , a Google Ventures portfolio company is seeking devops engineers to build continuous testing, integration and deployment tools for our rapidly growing two-way commerce platform already used by more than 5 million customers. You will have a huge impact on our business, enabling our engineering team and business owners make changes quickly (and at scale) to create the world’s biggest custom made marketplace.

About Our Engineering Team
The Engineering team at CustomMade believes that creating great software is a work of passion, creativity and skill. Inspired by CustomMade’s artisan makers, we believe that small teams of empowered engineering makers can create amazing technology. Here are a few of the interesting challenges we are tackling:

Enabling consumers to search for (and visualize) items that do not even exist yet
Building the ideal commerce knowledge graph for a custom two-way marketplace
Allowing seamless co-creation between consumers and artisan makers over web and mobile

If these challenges seem too big—or too far off in the future—think again. On the same day Facebook launched Social Graph Search beta, we launched our first release of Custom Commerce Graph search.

Our current platform is built on Python (Django), ElasticSearch, Redis, Celery, MySQL, and many more open source and open web technologies. However, we always keep an eye out for new tools and approaches to create the best custom marketplace.

About The Job
Heard of DevOps, DevTools, Continuous Deployment or Automated Testing? This is your chance to combine them all, in action, the way you always envisioned how they should work. You won’t rack big iron. Instead, you will build the tools, scripts and libraries to let our teams move from development to production—faster than anyone—with complete confidence in quality and performance. You’ll also pro-actively monitor our ever-growing platform, letting us resolve problems before they are even realized by customers. You’ll even pitch in on development across our entire stack to help us optimize performance and scale more efficiently.

You will have the freedom to be creative and provide a continuous impact. You will be free to pick the best tool for the job. You will see the results of your work everyday as you enable our business to make decisions more quickly and our engineers to move faster. You will have many opportunities to grow your role and contributions as we continue to grow.

About You
You are the “engineer’s engineer.” You are passionate about doing things more efficiently every day. You can develop on many open source platforms and tell war stories as to how you scaled them incredibly fast. You think in bash and are comfortable with Python and basic SQL. You are obsessive about ensuring all backups are done and no single-points-of-failure are present anywhere in the application stack. You believe on-demand virtualization (for us AWS EC2, RD2, and CloudFront) has created unprecedented freedom to scale quickly. You know the best ways to reduce risk are to deploy rapidly and often (for us, using Puppet and Fabric) across many small distributed instances.

Ideally, you have mission-critical database experience (distributed RDBMS and NoSQL) and have tuned performance at all levels of the application stack. You have setup automated test infrastructures and helped developers integrate them into their work. You have used a variety of open source configuration management, and monitoring technologies (e.g., Graphite, StatsD, Sentry).

Who We Are
CustomMade, a Google Ventures company, is changing the way people shop by making buying custom easier. We want to be an alternative to big box retailers by providing an online marketplace that connects consumers with artisans across the country. Take a look at our vision for this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5ZixpZ0ZYs.

We are creating a consumer experience where consumers can connect with an artisan maker to co-create something unique. Customers won’t see a shopping cart or checkout tag on our site. Instead they will meet thousands of makers who are thrilled about the prospect of creating something with them.

What You’ll Get From Us
We love our product. We love working together and going home with feeling that we accomplished something every day. Here is a look at how fast we have grown in 2012 (and how we like to have fun): http://blog.custommade.com/portfolio/year-in-review-2012/.

If you’re passionate about the custom revolution and have what it takes, please apply directly through the site. Bonus if your application comes with a portfolio or link to Github, BitBucket or StackOverflow.
