Diagnostic Medical Physicist

shall perform services and support compatible with the medical facility operating capacity and equipment. All services shall be provided in accordance with established standards, principles and ethics of the profession and applicable professional specialty organizations, the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, applicable Department of Defense (DoD, military specific regulations, directives, and policies, and MTF specific policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Serve as the administrative coordinator for the various surveys in accordance with the American College of Radiology Guidelines and Standards for Medical Physics Monitoring.

2. Develop, perform or analyze the technician performed quality control testing of radiation producing, detecting and measuring equipment. This shall include all of the hospital's radiographic/fluoroscopic, mammography, dental x-ray, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, digital radiography and computed radiography devices.

3. Advise the clinical users on procurement specification for all high cost medical imaging equipment purchases, performs test to verify procurement Specifications associated with equipment, and initiate periodic quality control; testing for all new equipment acquisitions within 59 MOW.

4. Responsible for the estimation of patient skin and fetal radiation dose from diagnostic radiological procedures. Consults must be submitted within five (5) duty days.

5. Reviews radiation-shielding plans. The HCP recommends the design and/or modification of all diagnostic x-ray installations with the hospital.

6. Advises as a Regional medical physics consultant, per AF148-148, for the Outside-Continental United States (0-Conus) and Central Conus regions.

7. Serves as the certified diagnostic physicist for the Mammography Quality Assurance Act (MQSA) accreditation program.

8. Provides radiological physics education. Responsible to develop and present radiological physics lectures to the radiology residents, fluoroscopy users and radiation workers.

9. Provides within ten (10) calendar days equipment evaluation reports for equipment within the local duty area. For equipment evaluated during Temporary Duty (TOY), the report must be completed prior to leaving the TOY location and delivered to the radiology point of contact for each medical treatment facility.

The HCP must possess a Doctorate (PhD) in Medical Physics or related field from an accredited university, and be board certified by the American Board of Radiology in diagnostic physics or in radiological physics.

Have and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

The HCP shall meet the following experience requirements:
AFI 48-148, Ionizing Radiation Protection, dated 21 September 2011, states that for nuclear medicine and diagnostic radiology: A medical or health physicist may be considered a qualified expert when they have modality specific training and performed three surveys for a particular type of equipment under the supervision of a board certified medical physicist or a medical physicist who meets all the education, training, and experience necessary to complete all aspects of ABR or ABMP board certification.

Mammography Qualified Medical Physicist. For mammography surveys, individuals are considered to be qualified if they satisfy the standards as specified in the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and have forwarded a copy of their State and/or FDA approved documentation to the designated regional consulting medical physics services.

Contracted Diagnostic Imaging Medical Physics Services. For Contracted diagnostic and nuclear medicine physics services, a board certified diagnostic imaging medical physicist is preferred and will be deemed qualified. As defined by the American College of Radiology in their Standard for Diagnostic Medical Physicist.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and orthopedic terminology

2. Continuing Medical Education (CME). The HCP shall keep their license / registration / certification current. The HCP will be required to obtain 15 CME credits within a 36 month period of each accredited modality. The HCP shall provide appropriate CME documentation to the COR or designated Government representatives within one month after all CME accredited events.

3. Basic knowledge of the Microsoft Suite.

4. Knowledge of computerized databases to include office software (i.e. excel, word).

Work Environment

The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.

During visits to areas of operations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
