The Digital Communications Specialist is a member of the university’s central Office of Communications and as such participates in most activities of the office, including developing and writing news stories for university publications, monitoring media coverage, and serving as a communications liaison to various colleges and administrative divisions. The Digital Communications Specialist also works very closely with the Web Services division of Information Technology and other departments that generate content for the web, including text, images and photos, videos, and social media. The Digital Communications Specialist will also: produce digital, print, and video stories for the university’s website, as well as the online newsletters, magazines, wiki, and other university publications; work closely with the web editor and members of the communications and web teams to coordinate and execute edits and updates to the university website, including architecture recommendations and changes, content creation and editing, and production of sites and pages; suggest changes to web content based on analytics and periodic usability studies; coordinate and conduct content management system training sessions for department staff; provide support to CMS users via phone, email, and in-person meetings; respond to and manage web request tickets; along with web editor, review all entries in the news, events, and in the media channels for grammar and style consistent with university web style guide and branding; update, edit, and delete entries as necessary; regularly review web pages for consistency with university web style guidelines and branding; compile and distribute daily email of all UMass Boston media coverage and update the website’s media feed accordingly; support university social media presence by producing content and managing various social media accounts; actively participate in ongoing weekly communications staff meetings and monthly campus-wide communications meetings; maintain current on search engine optimization techniques and best web writing practices; and other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Marketing or a closely related field and a minimum of three-five years of professional experience in news, marketing and/or web writing/editing or web publishing is required. Professional experience in an academic environment is preferred. Familiarity with social media sites, including, but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Instagram and Google+ is required. Experience with video production and video edit software, including but not limited to Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere, is preferred.
