This exciting career opportunity is located on the campus of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Dartmouth is seeking the right candidate to provide creative and compelling leadership for the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning (DCAL) and to effectively enrich Dartmouth’s strong commitment to teaching excellence by coordinating innovative programs that enable faculty to bring new skills to their teaching and to reflect anew on the purposes and goals of teaching and learning. The position reports to the Provost.

Founded in 1769 and a member of the Ivy League, Dartmouth College is located in Hanover, NH, with easy access to major cities such as Boston, Montreal, and New York. In addition to the undergraduate student body of 4200, Dartmouth has three professional schools and sixteen Ph.D programs.

DCAL facilitates professional development for Dartmouth's teachers and cultivates a community of conversation about how people learn. DCAL serves all who engage in teaching at Dartmouth, including faculty in all ranks, schools and disciplines, along with librarians, educational designers, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, deans, and directors, helping all educators at Dartmouth to practice learner-centered course design, implementation and assessment. The Center encourages and supports research about teaching and learning and makes it available to the Dartmouth community.

The successful candidate should be able to:

  • In concert with Provost and advisory groups and in alignment with priorities that emerge from Dartmouth's strategic plan, set a compelling direction, determine policies, and recommend implementation and operational strategies to enhance approaches to teaching and learning at Dartmouth
  • Facilitate dynamic discussions around innovations in teaching and mentoring, and provide guidance for relevant training, research, and communication activities
  • Participate in shaping initiatives around technology-enabled teaching methods and on-line education
  • Ability to recognize, draw on, and foster faculty strengths in teaching innovation
  • Foster communication and collaboration among DCAL, the faculty, post-doctoral students, graduate students, and others at Dartmouth and beyond; establish links with other offices on the campus that provide support for teaching
  • Facilitate the development and delivery of distributed resources, services, staff and programs to assist faculty in designing, funding, implementing and assessing learning initiatives and their outcomes
  • Devote special attention to issues of diversity, focusing on the benefits, challenges, opportunities, and obligations they present in a residential learning community
  • Participate in fundraising activities to augment the Center's endowment and current use resources
  • Effectively manage personnel, budgets, and planning activities

This candidate should possess the appropriate combination of:

  • Minimum of six years of experience in higher education
  • Demonstrated success in scholarship and teaching in his or her academic field
  • Ph.D. or other relevant advanced degree
  • Excellent interpersonal and public communication skills engaging all levels and disciplines of the academy
  • Demonstrated leadership and team-building skills and competence in fiscal and personnel management and long-range planning
  • Ability to work with a diverse community
