The Head of Engineering will report to the Vice President and General Manager, Data Storage Division. The position is located in Plainview, New York.
The Head of Engineering will be responsible for developing and launching new products that will result in significant increases in market share and revenue growth. This person will provide technical, project and organizational leadership for the Engineering Department, including systems engineering, mechanical engineering, software engineering and electrical/controls engineering, project management, technical support and sustaining engineering with the goal of delivering compelling products on time, on spec and within budget. The successful candidate will be capable of managing multiple complex product development and support efforts with a “hands on” style that affords a high degree of personal interaction with the process. This is not a “command and control” leadership role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will possess “significant potential” and be able to take on increasing amounts of responsibility over time.
Direct reports will include program managers, systems engineers, mechanical engineers, software engineers, electrical and controls engineers. This person is also responsible for engineering services and sustaining engineering. The total staff is comprised of 25+ people. The Head of Engineering will:
Collaborate with the Advanced Technology and Marketing organizations to ensure that new products meet market and process requirements.
Partner with marketing for new product development and design reviews. Actively participate in Product Life Cycle planning: contributing to the product definition and specification and prototype testing, and leading the effort to define process recipes and protocols.
Own the product development roadmap and ensure that products meet market window timelines and required specifications (On-Time; On-Spec; On-Budget), including CE, SEMI S2 and other regulatory requirements.
Lead engineering projects through product development phases from concept to manufacturing transfer. This includes product release reviews, product documentation, and timely generation of accurate bills of material.
Manage design and development activities with a focus on meeting system target cost objectives.
Coordinate with other departments to organize and staff functional design teams.
Understand and manage the financial impact of decisions on the business; manage the department budget.
Support customer needs for CIP and service issues.
Support the Veeco Certified Equipment business
Work with Marketing to present technical roadmaps to customers and set product specifications.
Facilitate technical support to the sales organization, including sales presentations, customer consulting and participation in customer demonstrations.
Assess critical skills and staffing levels necessary to meet the department’s business objectives. Manage the setting and measurement of goals and objectives for the department, including direct reports.
Demonstrate effective leadership skills in inspiring, driving and executing results through others. Develop and/or upgrade talent as needed to ensure success.
Communicate effectively across all levels of the organization and create a sense of urgency and inspire a commitment to excellence.
Must have proven project management skills and/or program management experience.
Continually strive to improve processes and procedures for areas of responsibility.
Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Ph.D. is a plus.
Minimum of 10 years of increasing responsibility designing large (ASP > $2.0m) capital equipment; at least 5 years in a technical leadership role.

This individual must be well organized and able to manage the details required to insure all aspects of engineering run seamlessly.
The candidate must possess excellent written and verbal skills, as well as the ability to work with other members of the senior management team to develop and launch new products.
This individual must be a dynamic leader capable of creating, articulating and implementing a vision for engineering.
