The Director of Human Factors and User Research is responsible for defining and driving the strategy and execution for how Proteus works with users –stakeholders including existing and future customers – to ensure that we’re “building the right thing” and “building things right.” This person will be responsible for building, developing and leading a team whose activities span qualitative need finding, quantitative feedback and analytic human factors techniques. Research will include both small, focused exploratory studies and highly scaled insight gathering. Output from this research and analysis will directly inform product strategy, design execution, and regulatory submissions. The individual must work well as part of multidisciplinary teams, and should be passionate about embedding Human Centered Design within Proteus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Advocate for users and ensure all of Proteus internalizes their needs and perspectives

  • Hire, develop, and manage a team of research specialists spanning a broad range of research methodologies

  • Source and manage outside researchers to load balance with internal resources when required

  • Drive customer insight and learning from future and existing customers

  • Build and utilize an in-house usability laboratory using cutting edge technology to maximize learnings

  • Design, execute and/or oversee studies using a variety of methodologies – both qualitative and quantitative – to inform and improve products

  • Leverage market research and clinical research capabilities to inform product development

  • Lead analytic human factors activities (e.g., use FMEA, task analysis, heuristic evaluation) for purposes of “design input,” risk assessment and mitigation

  • Collaborate with Quality and Regulatory to drive development of processes and documentation to meet regulatory requirements

  • Communicate learnings in an actionable manner, providing content and guidance for designs

  • Collaborate closely with teams to influence product strategy, definition, design and execution

  • Stay aware of industry trends so Proteus is a leader in using research to inform product and design

  • Support the growth of User Experience at Proteus

  • Knowledge of human-centered design process

  • Deep understanding of design disciplines to facilitate actionable communication

  • Understanding of medical device development and regulatory considerations including quality regulations, risk management, and relevant human factors standards and FDA guidance

  • Desire to advocate for users

  • Ability to both manage a team and execute independently

  • Ability to converse in an unbiased and empathetic manner

  • Ability to synthesize and present information from multiple conversations

  • Ability to manage documentation required for legal and/or regulatory purposes for certain types of studies

  • Experience leading formal Human Factors work, especially in medical, mobile, or consumer contexts

  • Exceptional organizational skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team

Education and/or Experience

Graduate-level degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, Anthropology, Sociology or Design. Minimum 10 years experience leading research and design. Experience with Human Factors studies required by FDA.

Language Skills

Working knowledge of German, French and/or Chinese desirable.
