The Center for American Progress has an immediate opening for the Director of the LGBT Research and Communications Project. This project combines substantive policy research on issues of importance to the LGBT community with rapid-response communications and messaging efforts. The Director will direct this project and is responsible for managing a comprehensive research program, developing new policy and communications ideas, coordinating efforts with other policy departments at CAP, and working with allied LGBT and non-LGBT organizations.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Research, write, and edit key policy reports and other materials.
  • Initiate, plan, and coordinate public events and publications to promote CAP’s LGBT project.
  • Determine appropriate papers, analytic work, and communications research to commission.
  • Manage a staff of five full-time staff and monitor the work of consultants.
  • Develop long-term strategy for program and also manage day-to-day activities.
  • Represent CAP in diverse settings, including meetings with members of Congress and their staff, the White House and executive agencies, media outreach and appearances, conferences, and panel discussions.
  • Track federal and state policy developments and direct CAP’s strategic response to those developments as appropriate, including drafting rapid-response blog posts, organizing congressional and press briefings, authoring or commissioning original research or analyses, and authoring or commissioning original policy proposals.
  • Contribute to and coordinate with other CAP programs and initiatives as appropriate, including identifying cross-cutting issues and projects.
  • Produce fundraising and marketing documents and manage the fundraising process with the assistance of the development team.
  • Work with Finance team to develop annual budget and monitor monthly reports.
  • Experience analyzing federal and state government data.
  • Familiarity with both quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Experience working with foundations, developing relationships with funders, and securing grants a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to initiate and engage in creative approaches to advancing policy.
  • Ability to work under pressure and with tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively with lay audiences and the media.
  • Knowledge of legislative and administrative policymaking processes.
  • Effective supervisory skills and ability to manage, mentor, and lead staff.
  • Commitment to CAP’s mission and goals.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Eight years of experience in policy development, advocacy, or communications.
  • Experience managing full-time, professional staff.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Experience in the LGBT advocacy movement is desired.
