Director Legal Services

Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners is looking for a lawyer to join its U.S. Operations Legal team as a Director of Legal Services. The position is located at the U.S. headquarters in Marlborough, Massachusetts.

Overall Description of the Role

The Director of Legal Services will support the VP of Law and General Counsel, US Operations in providing strategic legal advice and support on various regulatory, commercial and operational issues affecting Brookfield Renewable Power’s US operations. The candidate will work in close collaboration with the VP of Law and General Counsel as well as other members of both the senior management team and the legal team to ensure that the various aspects of the US operations meet legal and regulatory requirements.

Required Skills
  • Advises management and employees on a wide range of commercial, regulatory and legal issues, such as corporate law, statutory compliance, financings, procurement contracts, labor, employment, health and safety, litigation, real estate issues, etc.;
  • Provides strategic advice and participates in decision-making in legal and regulatory matters and proceedings in federal and state agencies;
  • Draft and negotiate complex construction, vendor, financing, and strategic partnership contracts, and manage same throughout the full commercial life-cycle,
  • Develops and implements preventive law strategies and corporate policy and compliance programs to help minimize potential regulatory, legal and business problems and issues;
  • Provides strategic advice and direction to the Senior Management with respect to legal/regulatory issues and risks within the US operating platform;
  • Participate in the legal and regulatory aspects of business development relating to US Operations, such as legal/regulatory feasibility analysis and due diligence inquiry regarding potential acquisitions and subsequent integration into US Operating platform;
  • Maintains a collaborative working relationship and alignment with Corporate legal on all legal matters;
  • Assists in protecting the organization’s legal interest and maintaining its operations within the scope established by law;
  • Oversees paralegal activity and provide direction on minute book activity and joint venture board book preparation;
  • Interprets and explains legal requirements and assists the organization with compliance with statutes, regulations and industry rules;
Required Experience
  • A minimum of 8 years of legal experience practicing in a broad range of complex activities, preferable with a broad exposure to litigation and regulations
  • A university degree (JD) in law and member of a provincial bar along with comprehensive knowledge of the US legal framework
  • An understanding of the laws, regulations and rules applicable to the energy sector or a related regulatory environment would be an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic advice
  • Strong communication skills; ability to present clear and practical legal arguments
  • Excellent business judgment
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast pace environment and to adapt quickly to changing priorities
  • Ability to influence others and to gain support for his/her ideas
