Applications are invited for the position of Director of the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research (MCOR) at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). The Director will also hold the title of the Mr. and Mrs. Joe F. Sanderson Endowed Chair at UMMC. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. and/or an M.D. degree and qualify for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor at UMMC. The Director of the MCOR will be responsible for establishing and sustaining a nationally prominent obesity, nutrition and metabolic diseases research program. As part of this responsibility, the Director will lead basic, clinical and population science research of the center and foster collaborative research among faculty in different departments. This individual must have proven leadership, administrative, and mentoring skills with a record of excellence in research as evidenced by scholarly publications and sustained funding from the National Institutes of Health and other federal granting agencies. The Director will also help recruit and manage a cadre of clinical teams focused on treatment and prevention of obesity. The Director must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to effectively communicate the importance of research-based programs to improve human health, recruit faculty, speak to potential donors, and build partnerships throughout the state to reduce obesity and its associated diseases. A top talent leader will be drawn to UMMC’s commitment of resources for the MCOR and will lead in achieving the ambitious goal of developing a leading obesity research center. Obesity research is one of the four areas targeted for strategic expansion at UMMC and the MCOR is poised for significant growth with several key faculty positions available for recruitment and generous laboratory space in the new state-of-the-art Arthur C. Guyton Research Center. Ongoing basic, clinical and population research offer opportunities for synergistic partnerships with other UMMC centers and departments. UMMC Hospitals and Health System encompasses specialty hospitals and clinical practice sites across the state and serves as the 722-bed diagnostic and treatment referral center for the state and the only Level I trauma center in Mississippi.
