The Director of Tax will report directly to the Vice President of Corporate Tax. They will be primarily responsible for ensuring tax compliance through preparation and review of federal, state, and local tax returns. The Director will prepare complex tax returns and review returns completed by other external tax preparers. The candidate must be able to deliver complex information to a wide array of constituents and must do so with a very high level of credibility and expertise. Their significant responsibilities will include:
Collaborate with Accounting Directors on limited partnership and joint venture accounting, including calculations of income allocation and cash distributions.
Assist Accounting Directors with equity roll forward work papers for various real estate investment funds.
Prepare technical memoranda regarding the proper tax treatment of proposed transactions.
Research and provide expertise on all state and local sales tax issues related to acquisition and operation of commercial real estate and the federal income tax issues related to the taxation of Cole sponsored real estate investment funds and the corporate holding company.
Prepare quarterly and annual compliance tests for real estate investment trusts.
Prepare state tax accruals for real estate investment trusts.
Manage fixed asset database software.
Manage tax return tracking database.
Coordinate preparation and filing of corporate and real estate fund 1099s
Ability to relay complex information and collaborate with diverse constituencies in a time-sensitive environment
Exceptional spreadsheet skills (experience with pivot tables preferred).
Ability to manage multiple tasks in a deadline-oriented environment.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field. Master's degree in Accounting or Taxation is preferred.
Minimum of 5 to 7 years' tax experience preparing/reviewing corporate and pass-through entity tax returns, including multi-state returns, for clients in the real estate industry (experience with real estate investment trusts preferred). Experience can be a combination of public accounting (“Big 4” accounting experience is preferred) and the corporate tax environment.
CPA is required
