Develop and implement strategic media relations initiatives that support Union Pacific's vision, strategy and business objectives. Lead and manage all aspects of Union Pacific's corporate media relations function. Key deliverables include building the company's brand and reputation through positive national media stories and effective messaging regarding current business issues and events. Develop and maintain companywide communications platform(s) for use by UP business leaders. Collaborate with UP business unit leadership to coordinate communications to internal and external audiences.

The Director Corporate Communications is a direct report to the AVP Corporate Commmunications in the Union Pacific Corporate Relations Department. The position is located at UP Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Advanced writing and editing skills are essential for further consideration.

Accountabilities:
  • Media Relations and Public Relations. Develop and implement strategic media relations initiatives that support Union Pacific's vision, strategy, and business objectives. Lead and manage all aspects of Union Pacific's corporate media relations function, ensuring consistent messaging across various business units and departments including Public Affairs, Investor Relations, Marketing and Sales, Operating, and other staff departments. Key deliverables include building the company's brand and reputation through positive national media stories and effective messaging regarding current issues and events. Create and maintain relationships with key national, regional, local and trade media and with key industry groups such as the AAR.

  • Writing and Editing. Advanced writing and editing skills are essential. The job requires advanced knowledge of national print, broadcast, and social media as well as working knowledge of AP style. Incumbent will write and edit news releases, develop responses for media queries, and develop content for media section of official UP website and other social media. Develop and maintain companywide communications platform(s) regarding key business issues and events for use by UP business leaders. Lead message development and production of the annual Union Pacific Sustainability and Citizenship Report.

  • Crisis Communications. Track emerging industry, national, regional and local issues that may impact Union Pacific. Brief and counsel senior staff and other executives on emerging issues. Develop communications statements for use with media, public officials and communities related to specific crises. Develop and maintain annual crisis communications plan. Serve as onsite media spokesperson at major events as needed.

  • Employee Communications. Collaborate with Employee Communications on key initiatives and events as needed. Provide support for special events such as the Leadership Conference and other senior staff programs and events.

  • Special Communications Projects. Lead message development and production of the company's annual Sustainability and Citizenship Report. Develop and maintain a platform or repository of key messages for managers who make public speaking appearances.

Required Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • A Bachelor of Arts degree or Bachelor level degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Public Relations or closely related field.

Preferred Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • A post-graduate degree (MBA, JD, etc..) or higher in Journalism, Communications, English, Public Relations, or closely related field.

  • 5 year(s) experience / knowledge in corporate communications including guidance and coaching to business leaders in effective media relations skills and/or development of communications platform(s) for business leaders.

  • 10 year(s) experience / knowledge in a management / professional position specifically media relations or public relations. Experience in a corporate business setting preferred.

  • 3 year(s) experience / knowledge in supervising direct reports.

  • Advanced communication skills demonstrating advanced writing and editing skills. Must also demonstrate advanced knowledge of national print, broadcast, and social media and knowledge of AP style.

  • Advanced project management skills demonstrating effective leadership of complex project action plans.
