The Director for HR Competencies at the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is responsible for all professional competencies research including leading all data collection, validation, and competency assessment efforts. The position calls for leadership of the entire SHRM Competencies initiative including the development of competency-based products for professional development, thought leadership, and organizational effectiveness.
In this role, the selected candidate will:
· Identify workplace and people management issues and trends of relevance to HR professionals, CHROs, C-suite executives, and business leaders. Oversee and develop thought leadership deliverables for the SHRM organization and in coordination with all content producing and content disseminating departments within SHRM, as well as with members and other relevant stakeholders. Lead communication of results of content and thought strategy to SHRM's membership, departments, boards, committees, the academic community, and other national groups and organizations. Identify and build formal and informal relationships with high level corporate, academic, business and public policy partners.
· Work closely with SHRMs External Relations, Publications, Membership and Knowledge Development teams to ensure that the program is seen as a visible and credible thought leadership entity that is known to be an advisor-advocate for specific HR issues as identified by SHRM. Serve as a spokesperson for SHRM at press conferences and other media events as requested and as appropriate. Facilitate seminars, summits and other events and activities as appropriate.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design a program of research around SHRMs competency model including contextualization and validation efforts.
Design communication and marketing campaign for all SHRM competency-based products and initiatives in conjunction with internal units and stakeholders.
Lead the development of additional resources for HR professionals based upon competencies research and the SHRM Competency Framework.
Lead all data collections at several professional conferences, association meetings, and trade shows.
Collaborate with SHRMs Professional Development team to develop competency-based tools for advancing the profession overall.
Identify and build relationships with high level corporate, academic, business, and public policy partners (e.g., other institutes, Centers, consulting firms, universities/colleges, associations, etc). Work directly with these partners to negotiate partnership terms and contracts.
Oversee, execute, and participate in events that will showcase SHRM as an Advisor-Advocate and thought leader of specific and previously identified issues; engaging CHROs, HR executives, CEOs, etc)
Develop and execute collaborative opportunities with the SHRM Research Department and the SHRM Foundation (and outside research entities) by working closely with the Director and Executive Director respectively.
Develop and execute collaborative opportunities with the Knowledge Center and other content producing and disseminating departments such as Publications, and all aspects of Professional Development.
Create, through writing and speaking, content focused on issues identified as critical by SHRM such as workforce competitiveness/talent management, workplace flexibility and labor market and economics. Content may take the form of books, technical reports, publications, seminar materials, and other content tools and resources.
Work collaboratively within SHRM on existing committees and through existing processes for content integration and content development such that thought leadership activities are integrated into internal processes and poised for success externally. Serve as an internal resource for content expertise.
Recommend through business case analysis and the SHRM product development process new deliverables and new thought leadership products that will serve the core membership up to and including HR executives.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Oversee a team of at least two researchers in the execution of all competencies-based research and development
REQUIRED EDUCATION :
A masters degree in the field of Human Resource Management, Industrial Organizational psychology or a related field is required although a doctorate in these fields is preferred. SPHR and/or GPHR (or related HR credential) preferred but not required (at onset).
At least eight to ten years experience working in an association-based research environment preferred. Experience with and knowledge of competency development, criterion validation, and competency-based assessment are the primary requirements for consideration for this position. Beyond this specialty area, it would be helpful to have experience in any of the following areas: workforce competitiveness/talent management, workplace flexibility and labor market and economics as well as other disciplines within HR. Familiarity with marketing and long-term business planning a plus.
Must have experience with analysis of job requirements and needs analysis for the purpose of developing a competency model. Expert knowledge of selection tests, assessment tools and methodologies for developing such tools required. A background in statistics, statistical packages and a strong ability to relate scientific findings to bottom line business results.
Requires excellent presentation skills with the ability to present to high-level public events and practitioner and business audiences.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills are a must.
Requires knowledge of the HR field and an extensive network of thought leaders in HR, business, government and consulting.
Some travel will be required at least 10-15% during first year - possibly more during initial data collection. Some international travel may also be required.
