Director PR & Communications

Develops Public Relations and Communications strategies that are consistent with the organization’s mission, vision and goals and that enhance MedStar Health’s status in regards to the media, the community and employees. Helps position the MedStar Brand in the marketplace. Responsible for planning and directing public relations and communications efforts of the corporate office of Public Affairs and Marketing.

Responsible for system media relations, communications, special events and community relations, under the direction of the VP, Public Relations and Marketing. Coordinates with other PR representatives in the system to manage media relationships. Also acts as senior public relations officer in the absence of the VP, PA&M.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, Journalism or related field preferred

EXPERIENCE: 10 years experience in public relations and/or marketing in a healthcare setting

LICENSE/CERT/REG: No special certification, registration or licensure is required.

Skills: Excellent written, oral and electronic communication skills. Communicates clearly to express thoughts and ideas (interpersonal and technological effectiveness competencies). Demonstrated leadership, management, facilitation and networking skills. Ability to make prompt and effective decisions, and to work in a matrix relationship. Demonstrated project management skills. Ability to manage priorities and utilize time effectively.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Develops with VP, Public Affairs and Marketing and the VP System Marketing realistic budgets that include appropriate funding for Public Relations. Monitors and evaluates spending on an ongoing basis, with a goal of maximizing cost-effectiveness of operations.

Directs development of communication tools, ensuring they are designed to improve continually the organization’s image and visibility with all publics – community, physicians, staff, patients, employers and payers. Supervises production, ensuring all pieces meet standards for quality, accuracy, timeliness and costeffectiveness.

Enhances professional growth and development of self and others through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.

Ensures that all projects support public relations goals and objectives of the Health System. Aggregate media reports for ROI purposes. Is main contact for media monitoring vendor.

Keeps leadership informed of issues and seeks direction when appropriate.

Maintains the confidentiality of information coming into and being disseminated out of the department.

Respects the privacy of individual colleagues within the department and expects the same in return.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Plans and directs a public relations program designed to increase the organization’s visibility within appropriate primary and secondary markets. In conjunction with VP, Public Affairs & Marketing implements and evaluates communication campaigns.

Recognizes problems early and takes necessary steps to achieve goals. Generates innovative solutions and ideas that support the goals of the department and the organization, and participates in the implementation of it.

Supervises all system media-related activities. Serves as official spokesperson for system as requested by VP, Public Affairs and Marketing.

Supervises, evaluates and motivates staff to ensure productivity is maximized and specified goals and quality standards are met. Develops staff’s professionalism and scope of expertise.

Works as a consultant to key customers within the system to develop media strategies, events, activities or materials. Provides proactive and reactive strategic communications consultation to senior leadership on system issues and activities. Ensures senior leadership is apprised of current issues and events in an ongoing, timely and appropriate manner. Recommends communication strategies to system leaders.

Works cooperatively with VP, Public Affairs and Marketing and staff in developing comprehensive systemwide programs, events, publications, campaigns and activities.

Writes speeches and special correspondence. Contributes articles to system publications.

REPORTS TO: Vice President Public Affairs & Marketing

SUPERVISES: Assigned staff.
