The Patient Education and Health Literacy Specialist is responsible for leading the system-wide coordination of patient education content and materials, and the planning, implementation, and evaluation of health literacy standards for Vidant Health. This position is responsible for fostering and maintaining relationships within and outside the health system and service area in order to meet and exceed system goals and regulatory standards.


Develop and lead a standardized, centralized approach and budget for planning, developing, implementing and evaluation patient education.

Establish health literacy standards and assess current policies:

Oversee system assessment of current gaps and development and implementation of strategic action plans to enhance patient education policies, processes, and tools.

Collaborate with various stakeholders (e.g. Patient and Family Advisory Councils, Human Resources/OD, Strategic Development, Accreditation, etc.) to meet and exceed system goals and regulatory standards.

Establish Vidant Health health literacy standards for various types of education materials and patient communications.

Manage patient education resources:

Establish and lead/Chair the Patient Education and Health Literacy Council/Patient Education Steering Committee responsible for review and approval of all current and new patient education materials, policies, and procedures.

Develop and implement processes that define, develop and maintain quality, patient-centered materials. Oversee selection and management of vendor relationships and development of specialized education materials. Develop infrastructure for inventory control and purchasing of educational materials.

Coordinate centralized management of patient education resources and consultative services for system educators.Collaborate with system leaders to establish technical control of patient education materials.

Measure performance and improve employee and patient engagement:

Develop and track performance metrics to measure effectiveness of patient education. Provide system leadership for the design of a highly reliable culture that embraces patient engagement and "universal precautions" relative to health literacy.

Evaluate employee experience map to identify and address opportunities to assure prepared, proactive team is present to support patient knowledge, skills and confidence.

Develop and implement action plans that enhance employee & physician engagement in creating environments that enhance patient engagement.

Collaborate with IT experts to effectively use technology to promote patient engagement.

Oversee physical and virtual Health Information Resource Center for patient-family access.

Develop strategic and operational partnerships across the system to develop and support new patient education initiatives.

Actively engage patient-family advisors in the design, implementation, and evaluation of resource centered to provide patient activation.

Minimum Requirements

Masters degree in health related field, preferably health literacy and health education.

Minimum of 5 years experience and success in leading patient engagement and/or education and health literacy initiatives in a large, multi-hospital healthcare system. Requires substantive experience in leading teams and change initiatives involving broad spectrum of patient healthcare needs and healthcare disciplines. Requires management experience in within a healthcare system or multi hospital integrated health care delivery system.
