The incumbent is responsible for oversight and direction of the assay development and high throughput screening group for drug discovery projects; leads in designing and implementation an automation/technology vision for the Institute in collaboration with engineers and key scientific stakeholders; leads a team whose remit is to support assay development for screening for the company’s drug discovery portfolio as well as contributing to the global Novartis screening effort. Develops protocols for screening including phenotypic assays, high content screening, phenotypic, flow cytometry, combinatorial, in vitro toxicity and specificity profiling approaches. Works with informatics team to develop novel methods for data analysis of large and multi-parametric data sets. Projects use state-of-the-art automation and encompass screening for early drug discovery using multiple formats and readouts (FLIPR, reporter genes, high-content imaging, luminescence, fluorescence, etc.). Works closely with automation and engineering and external groups to evaluate and develop novel screening technologies; manages scientific projects and academic collaborations to develop screens for novel biology in a diverse array of disease models. Reviews and develops scientific proposals for drug discovery projects; will have six (6) direct reports at levels of: Research Investigator II, Research Investigator I, Scientist II and Scientist I (Ph.D. and Masters level trained scientists).

• Candidate must have a PhD or foreign equivalent degree in Biochemistry or related field and 3 years of biotechnology/pharmaceutical experience in assay development, optimization and screening
• Must have experience: defining a vision of innovation in drug discovery to utilize phenotypic assays for screening; scientifically reviewing and managing projects (including academic collaborations) for early drug discovery projects and developing screening assays and protocols; working with engineers to design and implement novel technology platforms for assaying complex biological systems/processes for early drug discovery; analysis of large data sets, including multi-parametric and combinatorial data, resulting from high throughput and high content screens; designing and developing assays for compound profiling for in vitro toxicity, specificity and combination efficacy
• Experience supervising a team of Research Associates and PhD Scientists
