UW-Madison is seeking an experienced professional to create, direct and advise in a new Pre-Law Advising Center. The center will be a collaborative web of pre-law advising professionals around the campus coordinated by the Director of the Pre-Law Advising Center.
This position will report to the Director of Undergraduate Advising, hired in 2011 to coordinate and improve advising for undergraduate students. The director is responsible for campus level training, communication, assessment, technology and standards, and four reporting units: the Cross-College Advising Service for undecided and exploring students, the Center for Pre-Health Advising,the Center for Pre-Law Advising and the Undergraduate Academic Awards office. This position serves as the Director of the Center for Pre-Law Advising.
Job Responsibilities: Create Pre-Law Advising Center: Leadership, Coordination and Administration
Facilitate the development of mission, vision and strategic plan for pre-law advising.
Collaborate with existing pre-law advisors and resources; determine roles, responsibilities and scope of Center for Pre-Law Advising.
Create infrastructure of new center.
Develop and implement communications plan for new center.
Lead pre-law advisory team.
Act as a resource to other advisors and staff needing information and programming relating to pre-law advising.
Establish and maintain relationships with regional and national law schools and related professional organizations.
Direct the UW-Madison Law School Caravan.
Hire graduate students, law school students and undergraduate student employees.
Investigate using peer advisors as supplemental advisors. Pre-Law Advising: Individual and Group Advising
Maintain an understanding of holistic approaches to preparing to study law and related career paths.
Assist students in their self-assessment of interests and skills pertinent to academic work, cocurricular interests, and career options.
Provide accurate information about curriculum, University resources and programs.
Maintain contact through advising appointments and email with advisees throughout their time at UW-Madison.
Alert students and alumni to options and new opportunities consistent with their growth and development.
Develop and participate in programs and workshops for students interested in law and related fields.
Advise Pre-Law Society and other student organizations as appropriate.
Assist students in acquiring internships.
Assist with UW-Madison's mock trial team. Degree and area of specialization:
Master's degree, Juris Doctorate, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
2-3 years professional work experience.
Ability to work individually and collaboratively with a wide variety of colleagues and coordinate without authority.
Collaborative work style and team-building skill.
Ability to work with diverse constituencies; demonstrate cultural competency.
Ability to lead and facilitate groups.
Willingness to be innovative; capacity for exercising initiative.
Ability to act independently, handle multiple tasks, and exercise good judgment.

Commitment to the cultivation of the intellectual, ethical and the personal development of college students.
Demonstrated advising/counseling skills; experience in advising, teaching, or mentoring college students.
Knowledge of law school admissions criteria, curricular requirements, and options within the legal professions or related career paths.
Evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills.
Familiarity with technology and its application in an academic advising setting.
Willingness to be flexible in work hours and environment; willingness to accept additional responsibilities. A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring. A period of evaluation will be required.
