A Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications or a related field is required. A Master’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, Project Management or a related field is strongly preferred.
Experience and Skills
Strong knowledge of academic program communications and marketing is needed.
Project management and strategic marketing and communications experience is necessary. Experience with graduate and undergraduate student recruitment marketing is a plus. The Director is expected to have current knowledge of web applications, content management and development tools, marketing statistics and assessment methods and have leading edge knowledge of social media and its use in marketing and higher education.
Excellent writing and editing skills are necessary as content provision from the C&M Managers in each Academic unit is a priority. Supervision of events presented in an academic environment is very helpful.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and applicable web development and management tools is expected.
Demonstrated skill in interfacing with senior academic directors and faculty members is required.
Experience managing professional, creative employees is necessary.
Ability to think strategically regarding the role of communications and marketing in advancing the goals of the academic units and the University overall is a priority.
Ability to train others in the use of current web and marketing programs and applications is preferred.
Reporting to the Provost and University Vice President, the Director of Academic Marketing and Communication (OACM) is responsible for overall direction and coordination for all communications and marketing for academic programs at all levels for three schools and one college. The Director of the Office of Academic Communications & Marketing has a thorough understanding of the academic functions of the University as a whole and of each academic unit.
The Director assesses the needs of each school and college in conjunction with the Deans of each unit, the Provost and the Vice Provosts. Working with these leaders and supervising the Managers of Communications and Marketing (C&M) that are responsible for content generations and management in each school and college, this position prioritizes, oversees and coordinates all C&M projects within each academic unit from planning through completion. The Director will confirm and refine strategic direction as necessary, confirm project requirements, contribute to content as necessary, complete project request forms for the OCM, coordinate with the VP of the OCM on strategic direction and project priorities, and work to deliver results with a focus on
- 1. Project Management - establishing project priorities, coordinating activities among the academic units, collaborating with the OCM, setting timetables and managing the implementation process of content distribution through the web and multiple channels. Management of all activities of the team of OACM managers. This includes special event supervision and coordination and oversight of academic unit conferences, seminars, etc.
- 2. Content review and editing to assure the highest quality of content delivery is achieved.
- 3. Strategic communications and marketing planning with the Provost, Vice Provosts, Program Directors, the VP of the OCM and other senior members of the University. Confirming direction with academic unit Deans and Directors. Outlining plans and projected activities for all the above personnel. Assessing strategic initiatives throughout the year.
- 4. Managing the managers of the OACM, assuring team members are given clear direction and support in their efforts to support the C&M objectives of the academic units. Measurement of results and impact and report generation. Budget management.
