Employment Opportunity for Director of Development

In October 2010 SJSU launched Acceleration: The Campaign for San José State University, its first comprehensive fundraising campaign. We are seeking energetic, entrepreneurial, and driven fundraising professionals who will be a part of our Acceleration campaign team and play an integral role in the life of the institution and contribute to its transformation.

About the Position

Under the general direction of the Executive Director for Development, the Director of Development for Athletics position develops and implements fundraising strategies to secure philanthropic support for San José State University fundraising priorities identified by the University President in collaboration with the Office of Development in the Division of University Advancement. This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President.

Key responsibilities include identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding primarily major gift prospects/donors and, as warranted, corporate and foundation prospects. Specifics:

Personally solicit prospects and donors on a regular basis in accordance with fundraising goals.

Draft Memoranda of Understanding for gifts when appropriate and facilitate their processing.

Provide support to volunteer committees and individual volunteers with fundraising efforts.

Serve as the liaison with university and community groups to share information about San José State University and engage in on-and off-campus activities where prospects and donors may attend.

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position may also require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program.

Education and Experience

A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required (an advanced degree is preferred). Three years of full-time progressively responsible experience in development is required, preferably in individual/major gifts area. Possession of a valid California Drivers License is required at the time of hire for the operation of any vehicle used for work.

The ideal candidate will have experience in personally cultivating and closing individual/major gifts, preferably for an institution of higher education; demonstrated strength in donor relations; fundraising experience in a capital or comprehensive campaign setting; and the ability to effectively work with campaign volunteers.
