Founded in 1890 with a gift from John D. Rockefeller, the University embodies the vision of its first president, William Rainey Harper, a pioneer in education who believed in the strengths of an institution that blends an American-style liberal arts college and a German-style graduate research program. Today, The University of Chicago is one of the world's preeminent research universities. It is home to internationally renowned scholars, researchers, and intellectual pioneers. In the last century, the University produced more than 80 Nobel laureates in fields of study that include medicine, economics and physics.

With an unwavering focus on rigorous inquiry, UChicago research continually breaks new intellectual ground. Across disciplines, departments, and over 140 institutes and centers, UChicago researchers produce ideas that matter-and change the world. As a member of both the University development and Institute for Molecular Engineering leadership teams, this position will be responsible for the Institute's advancement program. The chosen candidate will lead and manage the creation and implementation of strategy for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and gift closure of the priority individual major and principal gift prospects in coordination and collaboration with Alumni Relations and Development staff, Institute leadership, Trustees and other volunteers.

The Director of Development will play an important role in articulating a compelling vision and the goals and objectives for the Institute for Molecular Engineering in a way that will excite external constituencies and motivate philanthropic support. S/he will have responsibility for building and managing a portfolio of 50-100 major and principal individual and corporate gift prospects. S/he will also serve as a key spokesperson for the Institute and its initiatives. This is an exciting opportunity for an intellectually-motivated major gifts expert to support an emerging field that utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to building and manipulating nanoscale structures to develop new technologies.
