As one of five divisions within UCLAs College of Letters and Science, and the largest division on campus, the Social Sciences educate the next generation of professionals, researchers, and leaders to socially relevant thinking and doing. Led by Dean Alessandro Duranti, the division of Social Sciences consists of 18 departments and programs as well as nine affiliated centers and programs. The Director of Development, Social Sciences will design and implement a strategic development plan that reflects the academic priorities of the College of Letters and Science. S/he will supervise two Associate Directors of Development, an Assistant Director for Development and a Development Coordinator for Social Sciences. The Director will conceptualize and design a development plan and manage implementation in coordination with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development, the Dean and faculty in the division of Social Sciences. In collaboration with other members of the College, development team, he/she will determine market feasibility for academic priorities and provide counsel to the dean. The Director will also establish and maintain effective high-level volunteer structure designed to provide community linkage to development programs and to assist with specific solicitations and other programmatic elements as necessary. He/She will meet with faculty in priority areas and gain knowledge of research interests and areas of expertise. In addition, the Director will identify a core group of prospective donors for major gifts and maintain active awareness of individuals in the prospect pool at various stages of identification, cultivation and solicitation.

Among other qualifications, the successful candidates will have progressive responsibility and experience as a professional development officer; working knowledge of principles and practices of major gift fundraising in a major research university; supervisory skills to provide direction, guidance and training to professional and support staff; strong communication skills to express both orally and in writing, the mission of the University and the fundraising goals of the campus, especially as they relate to the College; and the interpersonal skills to work harmoniously with other staff, academic leaders, faculty, community, leaders, donors and volunteers.
