Position Purpose Responsible for managing the human resources employee relations for the company. Provides expertise and consulting services and ensures legal and regulatory compliance is maintained and company policies are applied. Supports HR’s initiative in providing timely customer service to all client groups. Essential Duties 1. Provides coaching, training, and counseling pertaining to various aspects of human resources (e.g., performance improvement, sexual harassment, discrimination, diversity, legal/employment issues, union avoidance) to ensure complete understanding of potential benefits/issues and appropriate actions are taken. 2. Educates Human Resources Managers (HRMs), managers and employees regarding disciplinary actions, moves and terminations to ensure complete documentation and compliance with company guidelines. 3. Ensures timely completion of termination reports on all terminations. 4. Works with HRMs to investigate complaints and employee relations issues and ensures findings are documented and recommendation on remedial actions are made to management as required. 5. Works with HRMs to ensure all terminations for cause are reviewed and approved. 6. Works with Corporate HR and Legal to gather data/information relevant to employment and discrimination claims, charges, or cases to facilitate prompt resolution. 7. Coordinates the responses to unemployment claims, ensuring documentation/response is correct, complete, and timely to protect company’s interests. 8. Develops plans to minimize legal exposure and maximize performance by anticipating problems and suggesting and implementing solutions to address potential issues. 9. Participates in/leads special human resources projects and initiatives to ensure successful and timely implementation. 10. Assists other team members in supporting, organizing and executing departmental projects related to the efficient and compliant operation of the HR Department.
11. Responds to human resources related questions and issues from managers and staff (e.g., performance, discipline, termination, etc.) to ensure accurate and consistent interpretation and application of policies and procedures and to maintain compliance with employment law and regulations. 12. Coordinates performance review process with managers and reviews and provides feedback to managers on performance reviews. 13. Partners with the Culture and Leadership team to determine training needs of managers and employees and seeks out appropriate courses to meet the needs. 14. Conducts and/or facilitates various training courses initiated by the Human Resources department (e.g. union avoidance, wage and hour compliance, supervisor training, etc.). 15. Develops HR departmental training goals and objectives and provides oversight to programs through project planning, status review and prioritization to support company goals and objectives. 16. Travels and attends union meetings sitting at the bargaining table. 17. In conjunction with training department, analyzes and oversees design and development of training programs to meet training needs. Manages change to implement tools related to training. 18. Tracks employee relations and development activities and provides results to department head. Other Duties 1. Provides backup to Director, Talent Acquisition in conducting analysis of external market place to determine competitive salaries for new and existing positions, promotions, merit increases, equity adjustments, etc. 2. Supports the Company safety initiatives and brings to the attention of the Director, Safety any safety concerns. 3. Performs general clerical work such as filing, copying, mailing, etc. 4. Provides backup to other team members as necessary. 5. Performs other duties as assigned. Expert ability to provide excellent customer service and establish and maintain credibility and interpersonal relationships with diverse group of individuals (e.g., business leaders, colleagues, staff at all levels). Expert ability to collaborate effectively with others, implementing HR employee relations and development processes, strategies and programs. Expert interpersonal and written/oral communication skills with the ability to relate well and cooperate with others to effectively coordinate activities and accomplish goals. Expert ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines while managing internal customer expectations and resetting accordingly. Solid knowledge of human resource disciplines, including benefits, payroll, recruiting, performance management, coaching, training and development, and administration. Solid knowledge of contracts, contract terminology and legal documents, to interpret information. Solid ability to prepare cost/benefit analysis for employee/management development strategies. Solid ability to think strategically and problem solve through conceptual thinking, analytical and planning skills. Solid knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and email software (preferably Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet). Solid ability to manage conflict and resolve team member issues effectively and efficiently. Solid ability to negotiate and ability to clearly present ideas to influence outcomes. Solid ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Solid ability to work in a team environment along with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Solid knowledge of operations management. Solid ability to manage and motivate people. Solid knowledge of human resource database software. Solid ability to be results-oriented that makes a difference, taking initiative to make things happen, accepts accountability and has a “can do” attitude. Education Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Management or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Experience Minimum of ten (10) years ongoing human resources experience required, including experience working with all levels of staff including Exempt and Non-Exempt, union and non-union. Minimum of fourteen (14) years ongoing human resources experience may be substituted for previously stated education and experience. Supervisory Responsibility Directly manages up to 8 staff members. Ability to manage vendor relationships. Working Conditions Works in a normal office environment. Does not require physical activity other than that typically utilized in such a setting, working with standard office equipment (such as phone, fax and personal computer). Availability, willingness and flexibility to travel by auto or commercial airlines up to 60 percent of the time. Overtime is possible and may be expected in order to perform the essential functions of the position.
