The Director of Game Engineering’s primary focus is growing, developing and nurturing a world-class engineering team with the results being a continual expansion of individual and team skills and capabilities. These skills cover a variety of areas including soft skills (leadership, communication), hard skills (technical) and overall professional development. The position is ultimately accountable for the success of the game technology to empower the whole team to create an amazing game. From the lowest level systems to the highest level game mechanics, from the automated testing solutions to the productivity of the tools and pipeline, the Director of Game Engineering holds the bar for excellence and gets his team over it.

Hold the bar of world-class game engineering
Grow and nurture a team of architects, engineering managers and engineers of all levels to deliver and continually expand a great game for our players
Create a great development environment through processes, tools and workflows to enable high levels of productivity and effectiveness across the game team
Promote a culture of entrepreneurial spirit
Build strategic 12-month roadmaps to align game engineering with the rest of the team
Work collaboratively with other discipline directors on short-term problems and long-term business strategies
Develop people so that they are constantly learning and growing their careers
Regularly perform 1:1s with direct reports and encourage their personal development
Support individual career paths through goal planning and positioning for success
Directed training efforts for the continuous growth of skills across the team
People management including the recruiting process to grow the team
Share technology effectively and responsibly with other Directors of Game Engineering working on other Riot games
Grow external partnerships (contractors, outsourcing, etc…) as needed to meet business goals
Experience leading AAA game engineering teams
The ability to get things done through other people
An understanding of what the “best in the industry” technology looks like and how to get there
Broad knowledge of game systems: graphics, AI, animation, networking, game mechanics, etc…
The ability to deliver win-win solutions
Strong ability to coach, mentor and teach
Risk assessment and mitigation planning
Experience with multiplayer online gaming
Experience hiring top talent and mentoring people over the long-term
Experience with Agile, Scrum and/or other iteration based production methodologies
Deep knowledge of C++ along with other languages
A passion for games
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
Live service experience: rapid releases, large concurrent user base
Test driven development methodologies
Lean product development methodologies
