Director of Gardens & Grounds
Reports to: Vice President of Horticulture
Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) seeks a dynamic and talented leader to serve as its Director of Gardens & Grounds, a new position at BBG.
Reporting directly to the Vice President of Horticulture and working closely with the parallel positions of Director of Conservatories & Horticultural Programs and the Director of Living Collections Management, the Director of Gardens & Grounds will: 1) establish and manage departmental policies and procedures; 2) develop inspection and environmental reports; 3) review projects, scopes of work and budget as required; and 4) manage BBG’s 50+ acres of outdoor plant collections, gardens and landscapes. A primary responsibility is to lead the outdoor horticultural staff in developing and implementing initiatives, action plans, procedures and schedules to steward the Garden and its outdoor plant collections, and to inspire a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration and excellence.
A bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in horticulture or related field is required with a minimum of five years horticultural experience, plus proven leadership and landscape supervisory abilities. New York State pesticide certification or the ability to attain certification is required. Additional desirable qualifications include an arboriculture certification, turf management, planting design experience, and living collections assessment abilities.
Compensation, including a benefit package, is highly competitive and will be based on experience.
