Office of the Treasurer
Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications
SMU seeks a Director of Investments to oversee multiple asset classes of investments of SMU’s $1.2 billion endowment. The position reports to the Chief Investment Officer/Treasurer and will join an investment team which develops investment strategy, assesses risk, recommends managers and investment vehicles, and monitors current investments to implement the University’s program for strong, long‐term endowment performance.
The investment team works with the Investment Committee of SMU’s Board of Trustees in carrying out its responsibilities.
Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Develop strong investment networks for use in sourcing and testing investment ideas;
• Perform due diligence assessments of prospective managers;
• Develop analytical tools for assessing portfolios and data management procedures for keeping track of firms, funds, and people;
• Meet with managers and other investors;
• Monitor current investments;
• Assist with preparation for Investment Committee meetings and other reporting functions of the Treasurer’s Office.
Education and Experience
A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of seven years of investment experience is required.
A Master’s degree with a minimum of five years of investment experience is required. Experience with one asset class is also required
An MBA, CFA and/or CAIA is strongly preferred. Experience with multiple asset classes and portfolio construction is
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Must also possess active listening skills with the ability to listen and ask engaging questions.
Candidate must possess a strong understanding of capital markets and of complex investment strategies. Must also possess strong decision making skills and the ability to construct a compelling case for or against an investment idea. A passion for investing and the research required to make good investment decisions is essential.
Candidate should be self‐starters with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Experience implementing PC‐based spreadsheets and databases and strong quantitative skills are essential.
Candidate must be willing to travel approximately 20%.
