Duties And Responsibilities & Minimum Requirements:

The Director of Local Government Affairs reports to the Associate Vice President of Community Engagement & Strategic Initiatives and is part of a team in the Office of Community Engagement at Georgetown University. The Director will be principally responsible for: Developing and implementing the University’s political engagement strategy with elected officials, executive branch agencies and key policymakers in the District of Columbia and other local jurisdictions where the University does or may wish to do business; Monitoring and evaluating pending legislation and the activities of relevant executive agencies and offices; Providing assessments of the implications of that activity for the University and the higher education sector; and developing and implementing the University’s response; Building and maintaining relationships with local elected officials and staffs, agency heads and staffs, and other key policymakers; Ensuring that the University’s engagement with local governments advances and is otherwise supportive of its master planning priorities and related strategies; Communicating effectively to a wide range of internal and external constituencies to enhance the University’s profile and perception among local government leaders. Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s or law degree is preferred. The successful candidate will present significant experience in one or more of the following areas: working in the District of Columbia government -- with its City Council and/or with a city agency of relevance to the University; and/or with D.C. government in a government affairs capacity. Experience working with higher education or non-profit institutions is also a plus. The position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills; excellent writing, presentation and speaking abilities; the capacity to exercise sound judgment and think strategically; and the ability to build and maintain internal and external partnerships in the context of a complex organization. The successful candidate must also be able to manage time and workload effectively, which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing with attention to details.
