retailer founded in 1966 in Berkeley, CA . The company is known for its early introduction of darker roasted Arabica coffee such as French
roast and grades appropriate for espresso drinks, to Bay Area and US coffee
retailing, for both freshly roasted beans and in-store brewed coffee.

My client’s operated 200 retail locations within
the US as of the first quarter of 2010. Most locations are in California, with
further locations in Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Illinois and Massachusetts.

My client has outlets at many transit centers,
including several airport locations, such as both major Houston airports,
Reno/Tahoe, Kennedy Airport in New York City, Philadelphia International
Airport, and all three major airports in the San
Francisco Bay Area. A number of
franchised company kiosks opened in Bart stations around the Bay Area in early

brewed coffee retailers to offer specialty grade coffee, and to roast the beans
longer, producing liquor that is darker, more bitter, with less of the sour
taste of the coffees offered in the US at the time. They are viewed as one of
the founding businesses in the gourmet coffee trade. My client is passionate about the freshness
of their coffee and the Plant “Roasts to Order” everyday. They intend to
maintain the artisan quality of their coffee making throughout their continued
expansion. My client is steeped in

Position: Director of
Manufacturing Operations

Reporting to the Chief Supply Chain Officer,
the Director of Manufacturing Operations is responsible for the overall
leadership and operation of my client’s roasting plant and warehouse facility
in Alameda, California. Specific areas
of responsibility include coffee roasting, packaging, logistics, inventory
management, order fulfillment, shipping, quality control, and maintenance
operations. This role is accountable for the development and achievement of
monthly, annual and long term strategic plans as well as continuous improvement
initiatives related to people/team development, safety, quality, cost, working
capital, waste, and environmental management.
Longer term, the Director may plan and manage the expansion of my client’s
manufacturing footprint in the U.S.

Direct day-to-day operation of unique roast-to-order production and
distribution facility

Manage and mentor Team of plant managers. Direct Reports:
Maintenance Manager, Warehouse Manager, two Production Managers, Home
delivery Manager, Fulfillment Manager, and Inventory Manager.
Develop and implement strategies, processes, and organizational
capacity building programs to drive maximum quality and safety and to
achieve the lowest total delivered costs.
Prepare and
manage departmental budgets, targets, and goals and ensure direct reports
have appropriate information and resources needed to be accountable for
Manage, coach and develop team in setting and achieving operating,
customer satisfaction and people development goals.
Inspires people, leads by example, and creates a culture of high
performance by providing on-going and actionable performance based
feedback. “Hands on” management style.
Own the Continuous Improvement and change management process. Champion the expanded use of technology,
lean principles, and people development to improve supply chain results.
Proactively lead planning, justification, approval, and execution
for investments in new facilities, equipment, systems, organizational
designs and layout changes.
Partner closely with Supply Chain team colleagues, internal and
external customers to successfully deliver business initiatives.
Create and/or enhance strategic relationships with vendors to
reduce cost and working capital investment, ensure business continuity,
improve quality, and reduce lead times.
Build effective relationships with all local, state and regional
regulating institutions.

Qualifications and Skills:
Accomplished team leader and coach with history of helping others

Comprehensive understanding of key supply chain processes including
planning, production, logistics, and quality management.
Strong analytical skills with solid understanding of financial
data, measurements and planning.
Proven success using metrics, productivity tracking and data
collection systems to drive measurable continuous performance improvement.
Adept at translating detailed information and personal observations
into fact-based performance enhancing recommendations and effectively
gaining management buy in.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required; certification in supply chain
management preferred.
Senior management experience in supply chain management functions
( multiple areas preferred) with at least 7 years in a manufacturing
leadership role with full P&L responsibility.
CPG products experience required with food and beverage background
at a mid-to-large scale manufacturer strongly preferred.
Experience driving formal Lean/Continuous Improvement programs
