The United Jewish Federation of Tidewater is located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in a beautiful modern facility on the Sandler Family Campus. Centrally located with the Marilyn and Marvin Simon Family JCC, we primarily serve the Jewish and general communities of Virginia Beach and Norfolk. The Tidewater/Hampton Roads area consists of the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and Suffolk, Virginia.

Job Objective

Build community collaboration and cooperation, increase engagement and maximize participation of donors, constituents, partner agencies and members through comprehensive and integrated marketing and communications.

Job Summary

Working collaboratively with staff and community partners, the Marketing and Communication Director develops and ensures the successful implementation of agency branding, marketing, advertising, promotion and communication strategies which support the vision, mission and goals of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater and Simon Family JCC. This includes the use of formal and informal, traditional and non-traditional methods to reach all target audiences. This position reports to the Executive Vice President.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Development and implementation of marketing and communication plans which shall include goals and objectives outlined in organization and departmental business plans including budgets, target markets, target reach, contact and conversion rates.

Development and implementation of marketing and communication action plans at the program/event level in collaboration with program and support staff related to general programming, outreach events, community building, missions, membership enrollment/retention campaigns and donor/solicitor recognition. This includes the management of the strategic marketing plan and calendar to ensure coordination and communication.

Development, coordination and use of all creative, visual, graphic and written materials required to meet objectives of all marketing and communications. This shall include, but is not limited to:

o web site design and content management;
o social media and new technologies;
o public service announcements;
o brochure design and content development;
o news articles;
o press releases;
o donor and volunteer recognition material;
o all forms of advertisements.

Oversight of marketing and communications responsibilities of special events including the establishment of timelines, goals and objectives as well as budgets for marketing, advertising and promotion components of the event. These events may include, but not limited to, annual and biennial meetings, Super Sunday, major gifts lunch and brunch, Lion-Chai, Yom Haatzmuot and other events.

Collaboration with counterparts at local and overseas agencies to foster cooperative marketing efforts on behalf of the campaign and other programs. Person will also secure necessary marketing materials from these organizations to promote community campaign, and other fundraising efforts.

Management and supervision of all marketing and communications staff including Marketing Support Specialist(s), Graphic Designer, Social Media Associate, Online Communications Associate and any contracted services.

Coordination and implementation of public relations efforts for the organizations. This will include, but is not limited to, communication with local media regarding approved story lines, radio and television appearances and article placement, public and special events. This will also include effective communication and placement of story lines with Temple/Synagogues and Jewish News.

Creation and brand management of the two organizations including the implementation of marketing tools and templates that may be used by staff, constituent agencies and community partners.

Development of presentations made by Chief Executive Officer, donors and lay board members at organized special events.

Research and application of new marketing technology and approaches.

Act as the agency communication leader, responsible for communicating marketing, advertising and promotion programs and strategy to JCC and UJFT Lay Leadership through either e-mail or social media.


Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications or related field from an accredited college or university plus a minimum of 7 years of progressive experience including, overseeing marketing collateral creation, creative production, writing, and project management OR Master’s degree with 5 years of related experience;

Proven ability to manage/supervise employees and workflow;

Outstanding teambuilding and collaboration skills;

Strong knowledge of web-based marketing strategies and strong contacts with local media;

Knowledge of Jewish community with understanding, appreciation and passion for the mission and values of the JCC and UJFT;

Strong knowledge of Jewish heritage, values, traditions and culture;

Willingness to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required;

Knowledge of or experience supporting fundraising preferred.
