The purpose of this position is to provide leadership to the Nursing Department by setting, maintaining and improving resident care standards; by providing guidance and management of staff and care, by ensuring efficient and effective implementation of Nursing policies and procedures; implementing systems and procedures in compliance with Federal, State and local requirements, successfully managing relationships with residents, families and surveyors and by ensuring the department meets or exceeds metrics associated with quality of care, resident satisfaction and staff retention.

Required Skills

Assume responsibility for nursing services compliance with Federal, State and local laws and regulations.

Serve as primary contact for external surveys of department, and manage the survey process to ensure measurable improvement and outstanding outcomes.

Establish good working relationships with state ombudsmen and surveyors.

Implement, direct, maintain and supervise training and maintenance of Resident Rights program.

Assume accountability for the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures.

Report problems to the administrator, conduct resident rounds daily and take corrective action as needed.

Demonstrate consistent management of departmental activities, problems and emergencies and initiate life saving measures as needed.

Participate in the planning and establishment of Nursing Department budget and consistently operate the department on budget.

Direct and supervise the scheduling of staff to consistently adhere to PPD guidelines.

Assess equipment and supply needs and recommend repairs, upgrades and replacements to Administrator.

Direct the allocation of equipment and supplies throughout the facility and establish guidelines for the safe, effective, efficient and economical availability of supplies and equipment.

Recommend the number and qualification level of personnel needed in the department.

Ensure that vacancies are filled effectively and efficiently and minimize use of outside agency.

Complete management reports timely, accurately and completely.

Establish open lines of communication with consultants and consistently follow up on recommendations.

Direct, evaluate and supervise resident care and initiate corrective action as needed.

Conduct or supervise resident care conferences.

Assess resident needs and make recommendations for improvements in the care plan.

Assess residents and make recommendations for appropriate rehabilitative or restorative programs.

Direct, organize and schedule required resident assessments and transmit related documentation.

Evaluate resident care related to individualized needs or preferences, family involvement and physicians orders.

Assess resident responses to medication and treatments and make appropriate recommendations for nursing action to be implemented.

Manage the prompt and thorough reporting of changes in residents' conditions to physicians and responsible parties, and initiate follow up actions as appropriate.

Communicate daily with staff providing clear, concise information and specific assignments.

Establish and maintain open communication throughout the department and with other departments.

Conduct timely, balanced and accurate performance appraisals of assigned staff.

Consistently make accurate level of care determinations based on physician orders, resident assessments and the care plan.

Develop performance expectations for staff at varying levels and consistent with scope of practice.

Conduct direct training and monitor Silverchair compliance, take appropriate counseling and corrective action as needed.

Coordinate with Admissions to ensure residents are placed appropriately and that level of care determinations are accurate.

Coordinate transfers and discharges with other departments, hospitals, and families.

Establish and maintain good relationships with referral sources, participate in facility tours and model principles of customer service to staff.

Assume primary accountability for clinical metric outcomes, improvements and issues.

Direct and conduct department communication including stand ups, shift reports, Kingston Conversation and take appropriate follow up action.
