Director of Online Learning

3P4, Exempt, School of Engineering, 2 Year Fixed Term

The Stanford School of Engineering has a long history of pioneering efforts in online learning. Engineering classes for graduate students at a distance have been televised since the 1960s and streamed over the Internet since in the late 1990s. The current wave of MOOCs which have touched millions of students around the world are the result of experiments of our faculty in 2011. Advances in online learning hold great promise to transform engineering education and both the School and the University are making considerable investments in this area.

The Director of Online Learning is a newly created position to oversee online learning experiments and initiatives across the School of Engineering and coordinate with related activities across campus. This person will be responsible for managing and promoting excellence in the development, delivery, and assessment of online and blended courses and programs for Stanford Engineering students and for life-long learners who take Stanford courses at a distance. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Online Learning and Professional Development and working the School’s departments and faculty, as well as our partners across campus, this person will oversee online and blended course design and teaching initiatives and conduct research to inform effective practices in online teaching and course design. The Director of Online Learning is expected to be a resource and strong advocate in the Dean’s Office for pedagogically informed decisions about online learning.

Minimum qualifications include a doctoral degree or equivalent 5 years of experience in a relevant area; significant experience developing, refining, or implementing educational technologies in a university setting; evidence of excellent university‐level teaching; and experience managing complex programs and leading teams. Experience in teaching development or student learning support are highly desired.
