The

Director of Regulatory Affairs

provides strategic and operational leadership and expertise in food science, legislation, and regulatory compliance in order to support Sargento Foods business objectives and strategies. In addition to ensuring our food products are compliant, will also proactively bring forward ways that food products can be placed in the market with a competitive advantage.

Under the direction of the VP of Quality and Food Safety Systems, the Director of Regulatory Affairs contributes to SFI's success by leveraging expert level understanding of regulations applicable to our products and processes. Monitors developments in relevant regulatory areas and assures appropriate interpretation of these regulations. Proactively engages with regulatory agencies to develop correct business strategies; has strong interaction within industry associations to help craft and provide feedback on pending regulations, and engages key suppliers/customers in collaborative problem solving to regulatory questions and issues. Represents the organization's position on legislation and regulatory affairs to elected representatives, their staffs, and other trade, industry, and professional organizations. Develops and trains staff on department processes and procedures needed to ensure compliance with regulations in all markets, including domestic and international.

Acts as company's senior expert in matters of regulatory compliance, nutrition and labeling world-wide, including interfacing with outside agencies and legal counsel as needed.

Monitors and responds to regulatory and legislative issues affecting Sargento, including working with the IDFA, FMI, Innovation Center for US Dairy, FARRP, USDEC, and other industry bodies to prepare responses to any changes in food safety, labeling regulations affecting our industry.

Participates in lobbying and commenting, including face-to-face meetings with FDA, USDA, and other government officials.

Oversees the nutrition review process to confirm accuracy of nutrition information, conformance to nutritional targets and completeness of all nutritional information.

Defines and measures compliance to corporate food labeling objectives. Identifies criteria for substantiation of structure/function claims. Approves nutrient claims and audits compliance.

Reviews and approves all packaging artwork and customer-facing messaging materials to confirm alignment with product formulas, support for all claims, and compliance to regulations. Identifies and communicates areas of potential risk along with mitigation strategies.

Conducts research on new international markets to assure compliance with applicable regulations. Supports the export compliance process.

Leads development of Regulatory department mission, strategy, programs and operating budget. Assures consistent understanding and interpretation of applicable product regulations by the Regulatory team.

Provides regulatory consultation to R & D, Innovation, Sales, Marketing, Creative Services, project teams and other functional areas of the business based on knowledge and accurate interpretation of how products and ingredients are regulated in the Code of Federal Regulations.

Oversees the development of a variety of regulatory documents, including ingredient statements, nutrition information, range formulas, customer information requests, regulatory SOPs for inspections, and other technical documents.

Promotes the continuous improvement of regulatory processes within Sargento.

Directs development of regulatory systems software and structured processes that ensure compliance with regulations and result in accurate and legally defensible data.

Identifies learning and education opportunities for the organization to provide increased understanding of regulations affecting the business.

Directly supervises 3-5 employees in the Regulatory Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree (B. S.) in Food Science or related field from four-year college or university required. Advanced degree highly preferred.

Minimum of 10 years experience in interpretation and application of food product regulations in multiple countries required.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively and persuasively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, regulators, and the general public. Ability to interpret and simplify domestic and international regulations for others to understand.

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply advanced mathematical operations such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.

Strong speaking, presentation, and writing skills. Expert level of understanding of regulations pertaining to Sargento's products. Knowledge of Food Science and expertise in requirements for food product labeling.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to interpret and apply Federal and State Regulations to Sargento business.
