The Director of Sustainability will lead the development and execution of Solazyme’s corporate-wide sustainability agenda to support and enhance the company’s long term value proposition with investors, customers, partners and employees.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Create clear, compelling Sustainability agenda for the Company that clearly positions the company in the most positive light to customers, partners, investors and employees, leading to long term value creation and profitable business opportunities.
Work with business units to develop Sustainability value proposition in diverse product areas including renewable fuels, chemicals, consumer products, foods, personal care & cosmetics.
Support business development efforts by providing customer-specific Sustainability data and creating customer-specific Sustainability value propositions.
Obtain/create life cycle assessment (LCA) data on various parameters such as GHG emissions and water use for various products and processes.
Participate in business development activities as needed including presenting Solazyme life cycle analysis results.
Provide leadership and direction to internal and external partners, consultants and sustainability team members by providing expertise and guidance, establishing priorities, assigning and monitoring work activities and ensuring accountability for results.
Build strong, broad relationships with Sustainability counterparts at partner companies to jointly calculate life cycles and lead Sustainability component of joint development projects.
Build cross functional collaboration with various groups, internal and external, to enhance our Sustainability platform (product messaging/marketing, Corporate Communications, Government Relations, Investor Relations).
Interact with government agency counterparts to manage the process of obtaining regulatory approval for LCA-based certification schemes.
Provide insight to management team on Sustainability-related trends, identifying opportunities and guiding activities within the context of a rapidly growing, resource lean company.
Support various functions throughout company by providing agroeconomics insight.
Act as ambassador/evangelist for Solazyme’s Sustainability position at industry conferences and events.
B.S. or higher degree in a technical field, preferably Agronomy, Chemistry, Biology, Chemical or Biochemical Engineering
8-15 years of experience in Sustainability and Life Cycle Analysis
Strong executive presence
Deep business, analytic and quantitative skills to translate data into compelling business propositions and financial models
Ability to communicate Sustainability concepts succinctly and clearly to non-experts, including employees with widely divergent, non-technical backgrounds
Strong network in Sustainability field
