Director of Uncommon Impact

The Director of Uncommon Impact ensures that Uncommon shares its knowledge and best practices in ways that improve Uncommon’s ability to attract talent and resources, strengthen Uncommon’s relationship with home districts and states, generate revenue to sustain Uncommon’s operating needs, and contribute to the academic success of students outside of Uncommon.

This position reports to the Chief Talent Officer.

(1) Develop the strategy for external dissemination
  • Develop a 3-5 year plan detailing when and how Uncommon should strategically engage in such dissemination work to maximally benefit Uncommon and external partners (e.g., how can dissemination strengthen relationships with NYCDOE, NPS)

  • Support the identification of regions, districts and nonprofits for Uncommon to partner with in disseminating its professional development and other human capital practices

  • Keep abreast of trends in larger education field, identifying ideas / actors / needs that present opportunities to Uncommon; share back information to internal partners

(2) Evaluate the success of external knowledge sharing based on multiple sources of data

(3) Develop and manage operational components of external dissemination to ensure consistent approach to external audiences and minimal risk of internal disruption by working with Uncommon’s developers and presenters to:
  • Execute knowledge sharing without adversely affecting Uncommon’s schools

  • Access internal talent (e.g., presenters, collaborative members) and/or resources (filming, etc.) in coordinated and consistent ways (e.g., compensation)

  • Develop pricing policies / strategies for external knowledge sharing work

  • Coordinate calendar & outreach to external clients & partners

  • Identify and share best practices related to dissemination

  • Ensure appropriate IP contracts in place (e.g., Licensing, Use Agreements) between Uncommon and end users

  • Develop processes and provide oversight, as appropriate, once IP contracts in place (e.g., Revenue sharing with Relay)

  • Raise and resolve issues related to internal alignment / coherence between knowledge streams

(4) Lead efforts where knowledge sharing opportunities require collaboration across content teams

(5) Communicate with external entities about Uncommon’s external knowledge sharing
  • Serve as central point person for external organizations that seek to access Uncommon’s PD offerings and/or materials (e.g., Relay)

  • Represent Uncommon in networking opportunities related to knowledge development and dissemination (e.g., regularly communicate with people doing external knowledge sharing work at Achievement First, KIPP and others)

  • Work closely with Uncommon’s Director of Marketing and Chief External Officer to proactively manage risk and communicate successes related to external dissemination

(6) Work closely with Uncommon’s Director of Development and PD developers, deliverers and managers to ensure dissemination work is fully funded in ways that advance Uncommon’s ability to do the right work, at the right times, in the right ways, with the right partners

  • Exceptional strategic, analytical and critical thinking skills, including experience using quantitative and qualitative data to present options for decision-making, highlight trade-offs and propose recommendations

  • Track record of developing strong partnerships internally and externally, using influence (rather than direct authority) to prompt change

  • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively to diverse audiences

  • Deep familiarity with education landscape

  • An advanced degree (e.g., MBA, J.D) – strongly preferred

  • Familiarity with contract law and intellectual property – strongly preferred

  • Consulting experience – strongly preferred
