The Director of User Experience will be responsible for the development of a beautiful and engaging user experience for Wikipedia’s readers and editors. This individual will ensure that interfaces for reading and contributing are easy-to-use, consistent, modern, efficient, and delightful. The Director of User Experience will also lead the effort to attract and develop the industry’s best talent.

Grow, lead, and manage Wikimedia Foundation’s user experience design team
Develop a design strategy for Wikipedia and other WMF projects:
Develop and communicate look-and-feel guidelines and templates which embody our UX philosophy and goals
Develop and evolve a style guide that articulates a consistent design language consisting of look & feel, design patterns, etc.
Incorporate the necessary tools and best practices for a healthy UX function, including interaction models, user task flows, screen designs, wireframes, etc.
Be a thought leader on design and user experience. Stay on top of current trends in mobile and web UX, bring design ideas to the table that push the envelope on what our users and communities can do
Develop and drive a pragmatic user-centered design approach along with Product Management and the Foundation overall
Advocate and evangelize for user centered design both within the Foundation and with our community of users
Ensure deliverables meet standards of consistency and quality
Provide rich material for understanding our users through ongoing user research and testing
Translate usability and user research findings into actionable and measurable design improvements
Develop intuitive interfaces that delight our community of editors and readers

Required skills and experience:
At least 3 years leading a UX design team
At least 4-6 years working as a designer (UX or Visual)
You’re willing to get your hands dirty and produce design work along with the team
Mastery of UX methods and tools (UX Research, Wireframing, Adobe CS)
Functional understanding of front-end web development tools and technologies

Great to have:
Experience as a Wikipedia editor
Experience in designing products for large online communities
Experience in designing/developing open source software
Formal design education (e.g. HCI, Industrial Design, Product Design, Digital Media) Job Location(s) San Francisco, CA, US
