Position Summary
The Dispatcher receives and coordinates all ground and air medical communications involving medical transports into ACH. It is essential that the ACS be organized in order to provide prompt and efficient flow of information to all aspects of transport.

Position Duties

  • Clearly communicates information between all parties without evoking personal emotion.
  • Acts as a liaison between the medical, aviation, and ground components to ensure safe decision making during transport requests.
  • Maintains overall situational awareness during transports and communicates concerns clearly to those involved and/or the Angel One management team.
  • Consistently relays information to partner to ensure all parties understand the system status.
  • Actively listens to all concerns and communicates understanding. Ensures that all concerns are addressed in a timely manner. Uses effective problem solving skills to ensure appropriate resolution.

  • Accurately completes all documentation and ensures its accuracy throughout the transport.
  • Maintains a neat, clean, and organized workstation.
  • Promptly and professionally answers all telephone and radio traffic.
  • Adheres to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current level of EMS training and certifications including EMT, NAACS CFC and other relevant training.
  • Arrive at work well rested, with uniform neat and clean, and ready to work.
  • Ensures Confidentiality and understands HIPAA compliance.
  • Attends 75% of department and communication staff meetings.

Aviation / Ground
  • Maintains a working knowledge of aviation as it relates to medical transport including airports, weather, and navigational concepts.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of ground transport as it relates to medical transport including road conditions, possible traffic delays, and approaching severe weather.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with map skills utilizing Sectional Charts, Road Maps, and Computerized Mapping. Able to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: plot latitude and longitude, distance and heading off a given VOR, and ability to locate given landmarks utilizing street maps and computerized mapping.
  • Maintains the ability to read, interpret, and relay the weather information to the pilots / EMT as needed.
  • Coordinates with other flight programs throughout the region to advise of weather turn downs, informs of inbound status to their local air space, possible helipad problems, etc. and relays information to the appropriate personnel.
  • Monitors the airspace in and around ACH to provide a safe environment and is responsible for the coordination of all departures and arrivals including Visiting Aircraft. Relays aircraft status to all inbound / outbound aircraft to ensure situational awareness.
  • Initiates the Post Accident / Incident Plan for all vehicle emergencies as indicated.
  • Relays information concerning NOTAMS and PIREPS which are received into the Communication Center.
  • Understands and coordinates the use of fixed wing aircraft by Angel One team members. Coordinates all ground ambulance transportation needed between the airport and the referring facility.
  • Maintains on call contact information for the Aviation Maintenance staff.

  • Ensures the ACH Attending physicians have the current system status as transport requests are received to include team and mode availability.
  • Accurately relays information from a referring physician / staff member to ACH staff as needed.
  • Regularly updates the Referring Facility of the Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) and potential delays.
  • Provides support as needed for ARORA transport requests.
  • Provides support as needed for Mobile ECMO transport requests including vehicle availability and ground support on both the referring and receiving ends.
  • Acts as a resource to ACH and Referring Facilities for the closest, most appropriate facility when ACH is on diversion status.

  • Communicates with the referring facility to provide arrival times, coordination of ground transportation as needed, and to request all admissions information.
  • Maintains accurate petty cash records and appropriately distributes the monies as requested in accordance with ACH policies.
  • Updates the departmental team schedules as needed.
  • Maintains the daily schedule for transport team members, ICU physicians, and on call staff.
  • Maintains in service / out of service logs for aircraft / ground units utilizing the ACH Pulse system.
  • Keeps Angel One administrative staff informed of potential problems / concerns which arise during a transport or potential transport request.
  • Facilitates teamwork by accepting delegated tasks in the spirit of cooperation.

Position Qualifications

Education Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Experience Requirements

2 years total experience required • •
which includes 2 years of in a high volume communications center or dispatch related environment experience


Certification/License/Registry Requirements

Air Medical Communications Specialist (Certification) Candidate must obtain within 1 years of hire date or eligibility

EMT - Basic: (AR) (License) Candidate must obtain within 1 years of hire date or eligibility

National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (Certification)
