The 1807 attack on the USS frigate Chesapeake by the HMS Leopard offshore was a contributing factor in President Thomas Jefferson’s decision to ask Congress to declare war on Great Britain, the War of 1812. The ensuing British Navigation Acts and Jefferson’s Embargo Act closed the port and all but crippled the local economy. There was a gradual return to prosperity, leading to Norfolk’s incorporation as a city in 1845. KEY REQUIREMENTS

Suitable for Federal employment as determined by background investigation.
Selectee may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

You must obtain and maintain a SECRET clearance. DUTIES:
  • Determining services to be rendered based upon the nature of emergency requests.
  • Collects all appropriate data for each dispatch and route the data to proper channels for action.
  • Receiving incoming telephone or alarm system calls to dispatch emergency and non-emergency police and fire service within a city
  • Maintaining various logs to record events of the shift.
  • Observing alarm registers and scans maps to determine whether a specific emergency is in the dispatch service area.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
In order to qualify for this position, your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered. Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level operating telecommunication systems, such as radios, telephones, etc. to handle calls regarding emergency and non-emergency situations; providing information and initiating directions to incoming callers over the telephone or radio network.

Or

Have successfully completed four full years above high school at an accredited college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite in a field that is related to the work of the position.

Or

Have a combination of experience and education when combined, is equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirement. The level of the course work must have been equivalent to at least the junior- and senior- year levels of a baccalaureate program. REQUIREMENTS:
Selectee is required to participate in the Department of Defense direct deposit of pay program.

A SECRET security clearance is a requirement of this position. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a position offer or removal. If you possess a security clearance, please indicate the level and termination date in your resume.

This position is a full-time term appointment not to exceed 1year 1 day. Term appointments may be extended up to 4 years at the discretion of management and in accordance with applicable regulations. This position may be terminated at any time before the established not-to-exceed date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is primary sedentary, usually accomplished while the employee is seated at a desk or table. Some walking or standing may be required in the course of a normal workday but not special physical effort or ability is required to perform the work. Incumbent may at times be required to endure stress during emergency calls.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Duties are performed in a Level II area which must remain secured at all times. The work involves everyday risks and discomforts associated with normal office work. The work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated.

Conditions of Employment:
Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.

Employee must be able to multi-task.

Employee must be able to communicate clearly and concisely using radios and telephone equipment.

Position is a rotating shift position and employee may be required to work holidays, weekends and overtime.
