Under the direction of the District Supervisor, work involves mid-level supervisory skills in the operation and management of fitness programs, recreation programs, facilities, athletics programs, parks, and all activities and personnel within an assigned parks and recreation district of the City.
Hours of Work: Forty (40) hours per week. Must be available to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for the direction, planning, implementation, and promotion of City-wide fitness, recreation and athletics programs, and parks operations.
Responsible for overseeing operational activities in fitness centers, community centers or city parks.
Responsible for the supervision of staff in an assigned district, as a mid-level supervisor. Supervises and oversees the duties and work performance of subordinate personnel.
Responsible for communicating and enforcing department policies and procedures.
Monitors job tasks to ensure that assignments are completed in accordance with departmental procedure, and that accurate records are maintained to reflect work performed.
Coaches and mentors staff, creates weekly work schedules, assigns tasks and projects as needed.
Evaluates employee performance and makes recommendations for disciplinary action as required.
Actively participates as a member of the parks and recreation department management team in the development and review of all programs, policies, facility and park operations, special events, etc. Works closely with the District Supervisor in the coordination of fitness programming, recreation programming, athletic programming, parks and special events.
Assists in conducting job interviews for open positions and promotional opportunities, and recommends selections for hire.
Prepares operational reports for department regarding recreation, fitness, facility and park use.
Maintains accurate records of all volunteers for City operated recreation, fitness and sports programs.
Oversees fitness programs, recreation programs, athletic programs, parks, contracts, Special Activity Instructors, game officials and volunteers for all City run programs.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Punctuality and regular attendance are essential functions of this position, as well as working days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Fitness, Recreation, Park Management or closely related field.
Must possess at least three (3) years of experience supervising a fitness center, including supervising staff, recruiting and retaining fitness members, and planning and implementing fitness programs for members of all ages.
Must possess a valid State of Florida driver’s license, and have a good driving record. (If the driver’s license was issued by a state other than Florida, a State of Florida driver’s license will be required prior to employment.)
Must be available and willing to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred certifications include: ACSM, NSCA, ACE, CPRP, and/or CPRE. The following knowledge, skills and abilities are required:
Comprehensive knowledge of fitness program management, with the knowledge of municipal fitness, parks and/or athletic programs a plus.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, with knowledge of RecTrac a plus, and ability to learn new programs quickly.
Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of people.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, management, fitness members, vendors, athletic league representatives, and the general public.
Ability to lead and motivate staff, fitness members and recreation participants in a variety of fitness/ recreation/athletic activities with confidence and enthusiasm.
Ability to complete employee performance evaluations and improvement plans as well as recommend disciplinary action.
Ability to prepare and present proposals, budgets, and reports as required.
Ability to speak, write and understand English.
Ability to clearly articulate instructions and other information to employees and fitness members; with strong oral and written communication skills.
Excellent customer service skills, with ability to speak customers in a professional but cordial manner.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, or moderately loud when in the field.
Eligibility List Criteria: An eligibility list shall be valid for six months (may be extended up to two years at the City’s discretion), or until the list is abolished, whichever comes first. The list is formed based on applicants who meet the minimum qualifications. Applicants on the eligibility list will be given consideration for each vacancy.
