PRIMARY JOB FUNCTION:
Provides legal advice, including drafting of significant collaboration and licensing agreements, and resolves significant legal matters for Abbott’s pharmaceutical research and development and global licensing functions. Will also supervise and manage other legal professionals and staff supporting Abbott’s pharmaceutical research and development and licensing and scientific collaboration activities.

The Research and Development and Licensing Division Counsel is responsible for identifying and resolving highly complex licensing and legal issues related to pharmaceutical research, development, and licensing and collaborations.
The Research and Development Licensing Division Counsel should:
Possess in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical research and development, licensing, Abbott’s businesses supported and knowledge of the broader business impact.
Keep abreast of changes in laws that affect client areas.
Be capable of regularly negotiating independently with partners, customers, suppliers or government agencies on matters of strategic importance that affect a substantial portion of Abbott’s business or areas of significant importance to senior management.
Select and direct the work of outside counsel defines project objectives and manages project.
Identify unmet needs and future legal issues and proactively proposes strategies to optimize outcomes and results for the company.
Appropriately manage legal professional and paraprofessional staff to achieve business objectives and manage risk.

Advises legal department managers of critical project developments in a timely manner.

Advises Managers, Directors, Division Vice Presidents and Officers Recognized by these clients as both expert in substantive area and relied upon for individual advice.
May have direct budget responsibility and manages significant budget issues. Develops and manages budgets for assigned legal matters.
Serves as a recognized resource for both management and other attorneys on innovative ideas in highly complex areas of the law
1. Lead attorney for complex, strategic agreements related to pharmaceutical research and development, including in and out licensing, research collaborations and other strategic alliances, clinical manufacture and supply, device and formulations.
2. Advise clients, including senior management, on a wide variety of legal matters in the area of pharmaceutical research, development and strategic alliances.
3. Assist Senior Legal Staff on matters of significant importance to Abbott that affect a substantial portion of Abbott's R & D business.
4. May initiate and/or lead large projects, involving the coordination of multiple disciplines.
5. Serves as recognized source, for both management and other attorneys, of innovative ideas in complex areas of law, business, or technology. Provides significant input in the development and implementation of policies and procedures
6. Provide legal guidance, supervision, and support to paralegals and legal support staff.
10+ years of relevant experience
Expert in licensing, pharmaceutical collaborations and providing legal advice on pharmaceutical research and development
Experience managing other professional and staff.
Support Abbott's Pharmaceutical Products Group Research and Development and Global Licensing and New Business Development in the achievement of business objectives by providing legal advice counsel, protecting Abbott's businesses and technology, and managing legal risks to the corporation Counsel business personnel on legal issues involved in manufacturing, research and development operations Assist members of the Legal Division's Senior Legal Staff on specific assignments.
Must possess a J.D. degree Must meet the professional licensing requirement of the state in which they practice within a two-year time period, although the General Counsel may make exceptions under appropriate circumstances.
