We are looking for an innovative and organized Documentation Manager to lead the creation and delivery of the documentation set available as part of the open source projects associated with Apache Hadoop, as well as the additional documentation available via Hortonworks.com and bundled with our software distribution.
We are looking for a high-energy leader with proven experience authoring technical documentation for software administrators and developers
Lead creation of technical documentation for developers, managing a team responsible for high quality documentation across the Hadoop HDP platform. Deliverables include:
Technical guides for installing, upgrading, and maintaining HDP products;
Complete end user and administrative guides, which are the authoritative reference manuals for our products;
Quick start guides that help our clients get up and running quickly;
Best practices guides that help our clients maximize their return on investment in Hadoop;
Blog entries, FAQs, release notes and other updates on product functions.
Edit, proofread, clarify and expand documents written by engineers. Coach non-writers on ways to improve their writing skills.
Work with Dev and PM teams to understand product documentation needs and convert the results into the team's roadmap, goals, objectives, resource requirements, and budget.
Drive strategy, direction, tooling, and design of documentation deliverables across multiple products and delivery mediums.
Assist team members with activities related to defining deliverables, scoping, tracking, issue resolution and mitigation, and team dynamics.
Evolve internal team standards, procedures, processes, and best practices to ensure efficient resource utilization and professional, accurate, and user-friendly product documentation.
Manage team workload to maximize efficiency and ensure each writer is able to successfully support the documentation needs of multiple, agile development teams. Shift resources to match changes in business priorities as required.
Work with team members to develop their career plans and objectives. Recruit and train new staff as needed.
Bachelor's degree from a 4-year college or university.
7-10 years as a Documentation and/or Technical Writer in an enterprise software environment.
3 years of management experience.
Ability to understand products and write manuals and online help in a consistent fashion.
Proven record of researching and writing the very best documentation for developers (APIs, SDKs, web technologies).
Familiarity with standard tools used in technical documentation, and automation techniques for producing final documentation sets.
Ability to gather requirements, work with engineers and develop content.
